We all have four zones in which our activities occur: Genius, Excellence, Competence, Incompetence. Most of us waste time and energy doing things at which we're competent or incompetent, and therefore have little time or energy left over to do the things at which we're excellent or a genius. Most of us have not even clearly identified our unique abilities so that we can direct our activities toward our Genius Zone.
Genius or Victim: The Choice Is Always Ours
If you're not expressing your genius, chances are you're spending that time and energy going round the Victim Triangle. One moment you feel like you're the victim, next moment you're pretending to be the hero in rescuing someone else who's pretending to be the victim. One of our good friends, Leslie Sann sent us a story of a client she helped get off the victim merry-go-round:
After several sessions, the client, a man from a blue-collar background, made these remarkable observations.
"The sessions we've had have taught me that we choose to be a victim. It is obvious to me that I have to take responsibility for what I am doing. And so do you. I've been a hero my whole life. To be a hero I have to have a victim. And the villain role, blaming people, takes a lot of time. I don't have time for that anymore. I see the power of taking responsibility....If I treat a victim like a victim, that's what I'll get, a victim. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. When I establish a higher level of expectation and tell them, "you can do it," I get a much higher level of return. It takes too much time and there is too much aggravation to be the hero, and I end up getting blamed for everything anyway."
Leslie asked him what he was doing with all the time and energy he used to spend being the victim and the hero to others' victim. He said, "I'm getting my exercise device manufactured. I've been working out in the gym and last weekend I went riding on my Harley with my friends...."
Time for all of us to saddle up the Harley of our Genius and take it for a summer spin!
