Sonoma County Measure M Ballot Initiative

by The Campaign - 10/27/2005
As you may be aware, on November 8th, voters in Sonoma County, California, will be voting on initiative appearing on the ballot as Measure M. If Measure M passes, it would put a ten year moratorium in place that would restrict the growing of genetically engineered crops in Sonoma County.

Similar California bills have already been passed in previous elections in Mendocino County and Marin County.

The pro-biotech opposition has staged an aggressive campaign against Measure M.

The Wednesday edition of the San Francisco Chronicle had a good article on Measure M called "Measure to ban genetically altered crops splits voters." We have posted this article in the "News from the United States" Forum. Here is a direct link to the article: http://www.thecampaign.org/forums/showthread.php?t=24

The Campaign's web site has information about Measure M and past initiatives at: http://www.thecampaign.org/initiatives.php

The group heading up the Measure M effort is GE FREE Sonoma County. Naturally they could use your financial support. And if you live in the Sonoma County area, they could use your assistance in many ways. You can call their office at (707) 823-4410. Their office is located in Santa Rosa at

540 Mendocino Ave. (Between 7th and 9th Streets). Here is a link to the GE FREE Sonoma County web site: http://www.gefreesonoma.org/

We also understand that there are several thousand copies of the excellent documentary, The Future of Food, available to residents of Sonoma County for free. The idea is to get as many people in Sonoma County to see The Future of Food as possible. Most "undecided" voters will likely cast a vote against growing genetically engineered foods after seeing The Future of Food.

The Future of Food is now playing in movie theaters in the United States and is often being "held over" due to its popularity. The DVD will be re-released in December. The Campaign is working with the writer-director Deborah Koons Garcia and Lily Films on adding bonus activist content to the DVD.

The Future of Food is a terrific movie and we encourage everyone to see in a theater or when it is released again as a DVD. Here is a link to The Future of Food web site page that lists the theaters it is playing in now or coming to soon: http://www.thefutureoffood.com/screenings.htm
