California University Launches First Doctoral Program In Ayurvedic Medicine
Advancing the study of Ayurveda to new levels in the United States, the state of California has granted approval to American University of Complementary Medicine (AUCM) (www.aucm.org) to offer a professional M.S. and a combined scholarly-clinical Ph.D. program in Ayurvedic Medicine, the first programs of their kind in the nation. Ayurvedic medicine is the comprehensive medical system indigenous to India which originated at least 5,000 years ago. "The program brings together gifted Ayurvedic physicians, East India scholars, and American researchers of Ayurvedic medicine," according to Kathyrn White, Ph.D., L.Ac., President and Chief Academic Officer of AUCM. To maintain the authenticity of the Ayurvedic Medicine taught in the school, AUCM is modeling the Masters and Ph.D. offerings on the programs provided in Ayurvedic medical schools in India. AUCM is now enrolling students for the Masters Program in Ayurvedic Medicine for the Fall 2001 Trimester.

Natural and sustainable products industry leaders gathered June 20-22, 2001, at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield, CO, to network and share ideas and information in the $230 billion U.S. market for "Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability," or LOHAS. Acupuncture Better Than Massage
Scientists have found that when it comes to chronic neck pain, acupuncture works better than massage in the short term. Massage and acupuncture both have local effects, but acupuncture seems to also have general effects on health promotion.
Experts Rethink Environmental Health
Since the green movement began in the 1960s, environmental health efforts have focused largely on reducing air and water pollution and regulating chemical toxins. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reframing the issue as an aspect of public health. In their view, environmental health considerations should include such things as whether neighborhood design discourages exercise by omitting sidewalks or bicycle paths and whether long commutes or office-building designs increase rates of depression.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
Iron is unique among essential minerals, because there is no mechanism for its excretion once absorbed into the body. Whatever iron is absorbed must either be used or stored and excessive storage of iron in the body promotes the generation of free radicals. In "Dangers of Iron Supplements" Dr. Galland reports that excess dietary iron has been implicated by some scientists as a cause of cancer and heart disease, and that it also increases the risk of bacterial infection. "No one should ever take iron supplements unless iron deficiency is present, says Dr. Galland, "with the possible exception of pregnant women."
Mind Body Health Newsletter
A study on aging found that for men the frequency of sexual intercourse was associated with lower death rates. For women the enjoyment of intercourse was associated with longer life. In "Sex May Prolong Life" David S. Sobel, M.D. shows us studies exist to help us understand and enhance the health benefits of one of the most common, and certainly most pleasurable activities we humans experience.
Keeping Fit
A lot of attention is focused on the abdominal muscles, with the assumption that everyone can develop a ripped and ridged midsection. Unfortunately, this is not the case, anymore than the misconception that anyone can build broad shoulders and bulging biceps. Genetics has a lot to do with our physical structure and muscular potential. However, in "A Muscular Midsection" Dr. Wayne L. Wescott gives us the "good news" that there is a training program with proper nutrition and exercise that will enable all of us to improve our midsection strength and appearance and achieve an attainable goal of a reasonably lean and tight midsection.

Teeccino - Destress With Caffeine Free Herbal Coffee
Coffee drinkers may be surprised to learn that herbal coffee actually has nutritional benefits which help nourish and keep the body healthy. Coffee, on the other hand, only supplies the drug, caffeine, which stimulates your adrenal glands but does not provide energy - actually it could deplete the body's energy reserves. Teeccino is the first herbal coffee on the market - a blend of herbs, grains, fruits and nuts that are roasted, ground and brewed just like coffee. Dark, rich, and full-bodied, Teeccino brings you all the satisfaction of a robust brew with no caffeine reaction. Teeccino tastes mildly sweet from dates and figs, with only 15 calories per cup.
