In the United States, the use of alternative medicines by cancer patients continues to increase. Survey results show that the most common reason for taking alternatives is to improve quality of life, but about 30 percent of patients are hoping they will provide a cure or prevent a recurrence. Most people surveyed believe the extra therapies they are using are beneficial and 85 percent believe they are safe.

Blueberries And Spinach Are Seen As Food for Thought
With the U.S. population aging, and baby boomers approaching senior-citizen status in massive numbers, there is an increasing interest in finding ways to improve the lives of older people, not incidentally decreasing the cost of supporting the health of those new seniors. A study by university researchers - aided by some old, memory-challenged rats - indicates eating blueberries may help fight age-related memory loss in rodents and, by extension, perhaps in humans. Cooked blueberries, as in a blueberry pie, might be good for you. Eating strawberries and spinach may have similar benefits.

The Healer Within
The presence of special breathing practices in the ancient cultures has always been a mystery to people in the Western world. In "Extending the Inhalation" Dr. Roger Jahnke explains that even with deep breathing there is still some lung capacity left following the exhalation. In this method the fullest extent of filling and emptying of the lungs is enacted. Breathe in until you think the lungs are filled. Then take in 3 more short breaths, to full lung capacity. Following the emptying of the lungs on the exhalation, expel three additional breaths.
Mind Over Matter

In "Getting Together for the Holidays: memories everlasting" Barry Bittman, M.D. challenges us to create wonderful memories during this year's holiday get-together that will live on in our hearts.
Understanding Homeopathy
The homeopathic method of individualizing a medicine based on the totality of the person's symptoms is a sophisticated 21st century science. Homeopaths assert that body and mind are inseparable, and they posit the necessity of looking at "bodymind" types. In "Homeopathic Typologies: The Bodymind Personalities" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. introduces constitutional therapies, the ones based on certain groupings of bodymind symptom patterns corresponding with the sensitivity of a particular homeopathic medicine.
Mind Boosters
Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive deterioration in mental functioning with onset most commonly starting in one's 80s, although it has been known to start as early as age 30. While scientists have not fully determined the actual causes of Alzheimer's disease, a number of treatment options have been proposed. These include the use of antioxidants, blocking the breakdown of acetylcholine, and improving blood flow to brain cells. In "Supplements For Patients With Alzheimer's Disease" Ray Sahelian, M.D. encourages everyone who knows someone with Alzheimer’s to urge them to explore nutritional therapies. His column references specific research-backed suggestions.

Childhood sore throats occur most often in winter and spring. A sore throat may be accompanied by a head cold, runny nose, or ear infection. The majority of sore throats are minor viral illnesses that can be treated easily at home. However, about one-third of childhood sore throats are diagnosed as "strep" throat, an infection caused by the Streptococcus bacteria. In Sore Throat" Janet Zand L.Ac., O.M.D. offers parents guidelines for analyzing symptoms and a variety of treatment options - conventional, dietary, nutritional, herbal, homeopathy, and acupressure - to consider.
