EU Threatens to Ban Vitamin Supplements
Some of the most popular vitamin and mineral pills are likely to be banned throughout the European Union countries after a vote in the European Parliament March 12th. Critics say that the law will massively reduce the freedom of consumers to make their own informed choices and put hundreds of health food shops out of business in Europe.

Most Health Plans Offer Programs To Encourage Exercise
Most U.S. health plans offer financial incentives or programs intended to promote physical activity among their members. With 61 percent of American adults currently meeting the scientific definition of overweight or obese, it is encouraging that 95 percent (of health plans responding to a survey) routinely provide healthy lifestyle messages to their members.

Breakfast Might Protect from Colds And Flu
A good mood and eating breakfast every day may help keep cold and flu viruses at bay. A research study questioned participants about their lifestyles. The results showed those who reported more than one illness over the 10-week period were less likely to eat breakfast and more likely to consume alcohol. Individuals with multiple illnesses reported having endured difficult life events in the preceding 12 months that contributed to feelings of stress.

COLUMNS FROM THE EXPERTS

Dr. Galland's Integrated Medicine
Although the body readily makes most of the fat that it needs from dietary starch or sugar, humans lack the ability to make essential fatty acids (EFAs) and must get them in food. EFAs are found in all foods but are most abundant in certain oils, according to Dr. Leo Galland in "Essential Fatty Acids--The Key To Health." They come in two distinct families, based upon their chemical structure. The two EFA families are not interchangeable and, in fact, tend to compete with one another in the body's metabolic pathways. The larger family, called "omega-six" EFAs, are abundant in many vegetable seed oils, including corn, sunflower and safflower. Deficiency of omega-six EFAs causes impairment of growth and fertility, hormonal disturbances and immunologic abnormalities. An excess of omega-six EFAs may promote the development of cancer. >"

Mind Body Health Newsletter
Today, most people don't just want to live long lives. They want to live long healthy lives, or as the old adage puts it, "to die younger, as old as possible." Most of us want to add life to years, not just years to life. We all know people who have been very successful at aging - not just the "super elders" who run marathons, but ordinary people who maintain vital, active lives, even in the face of chronic illness, says David S. Sobel, M.D. in "The Keys to Healthy Aging." But what are the predictors of healthy aging? The results of a 16-year study of nearly 400 older men and women age 65-95 shed interesting light on some of the key factors.

Keeping Fit
Although softball does not require cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength is a key factor for improved throwing, batting and sprinting. Regular and sensible strength training can be highly beneficial for improved softball performance and reduced risk of softball related injuries. In "Strength Training for Softball" Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. offers a few stretching exercises to complement the strength exercises for a comprehensive softball conditioning program.

Integrative Dentistry
In "Homeopathy In Dentistry" Flora Parsa Stay D.D.S. presents general guidelines for homeopathic remedies in dental care. Her chart provides over two dozen conditions and symptoms correlated to the appropriate homeopathic remedy for each.

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGE

Healthy Home
Although research on the beneficial effects of plants is relatively limited as yet, the evidence is sufficiently strong to make them an integral part of any safe home, rather than simply decorative items. In "The Top Ten Plants to Clean Indoor Air" Annie Berthold-Bond of Care2 lists ten plants that are the most effective all-around in counteracting offgassed chemicals and contributing to balanced internal humidity.

At least 15% of females at some point in their lives have an acute urinary tract infection. In "Cystitis" David L. Hoffmann B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. explains this inflammation of the wall and lining of the urinary bladder and offers suggestions for treatment with herbs, diet, and supplements.

Healthy Kitchen - Healthy Foods
Fresh vegetables have life force and are a major contributor to health and vitality. In "Vegetables" Elson M. Haas M.D. reminds us that most vegetables are very high in water and necessary vitamins and minerals and are low in fat and protein. Thus, they are a perfect complement to animal protein meals to help supply the needed nutrients that aid the digestion and utilization of those concentrated foods.

Healthy Alternatives
Osteopathy is a system of health care which recognizes that the self-healing, self-regulating ability of the body is dependent upon a number of factors, including favorable environmental conditions (internal and external), adequate nutrition and normal structural integrity. In "What is Osteopathy?" Leon Chaitow N.D., D.O., M.R.O. covers the concept of osteopathy and the distinction between osteopathic and other forms of physical treatment.
