Panel Seeks Alternative Care Study
White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy has completed its two year study and submitted its recommendations to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Commissions work was "...to see what's helpful for the people living in this country and do our best, where it's safe and effective, to make it available for them." reported WHCCAMP Chair, James Gordon, M.D.
UM Studying Herbs' Effect On Menopause
For most women, what to do about hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and other fallout from "the change of life" has been like throwing darts at a board, blindfolded. The University of Miami has been hired by a supplement company to do scientific clinical testing of an herbal's ability to reduce these symptoms associated with menopause. One of the things of greatest interest to the key researcher was that native Americans used the natural roots being used in the study and it seemed to work for them. They didn't have hormones and pharmacological options yet they were able to work things out with natural remedies.
Health Shops under Threat from EU Rule
On March 13th the European Parliament passed the European Union Food Supplements Directive. Now herbal remedy and vitamin manufacturers will have to submit the results of tests to a European scientific committee if they wish their products to be deemed safe and able to stay on the market. In the United Kingdom and countries throughout Europe it is being projected that health shops (health food stores) will be forced out of business, and a number of dietary supplements will be banned.
