Hospital Infections Kill Needlessly
About 103,000 deaths were linked to hospital infections in 2000. Nearly 75% of the deaths were preventable - caused by unsanitary facilities, germ-laden instruments and unwashed hands. Infection rates are exacerbated by hospital cutbacks and staff carelessness.
Second study finds estrogen use risky
A week after a landmark study of estrogen-progestin therapy was halted because it increased women's risks of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and deadly blood clots, a separate study has concluded that taking estrogen alone, especially for more than 10 years, increases the chances of ovarian cancer.
Post-Surgery Chemotherapy Questioned for Certain Breast Cancer Patients
Postmenopausal breast cancer patients with estrogen-sensitive tumors, who undergo chemotherapy following surgery to increase their survival odds, may not benefit from the regimen, which is often prescribed along with the hormone-blocking drug tamoxifen. A study indicated that cancer treatments need to be more finely "tailored" to the characteristics of patients and their tumors.
