DHEA Boosts Growth Rate of Human Neural Stem Cells
New work, conducted by a team of university scientists, provides some of the first direct evidence of the biological effects of DHEA on the human nervous system. Human neural stem cells, exposed in a lab dish to the steroid DHEA, exhibit a remarkable uptick in growth rates, suggesting that the hormone may play a role in helping the brain produce new cells. One of the intriguing aspects of the new work is the possibility that DHEA could have some positive effects on the adult human brain.

Breast Cancer Risk Is Higher with Antibiotics, Study Says
According to a new study, women who took antibiotics were 1-1⁄2 to 2 times more likely to have breast cancer than those who didn't. The authors of the report stressed that it doesn't mean the antibiotics caused the cancer. The study speculated that antibiotics might hurt the body's immune system by interfering with digestion of foods and the subsequent release of their vitamin C and other protective qualities. Or it could have been the infections and inflammations, not the antibiotics, that caused the cancer. Or it could be that different women have different immune systems, and maybe that's why they get cancer.

Suppressed Data From Negative Drug Trials Distorts Science
Pharmaceutical companies "deceive" doctors and their patients when they withhold unfavourable data on prescription medicines. The editorial by the Canadian Medical Association Journal was part of a package of articles looking at the suppression of trial data, with a particular focus on testing of antidepressant drugs in children and teenagers. Previously the journal had revealed that one drug company deliberately withheld trial results that showed their product was no more effective than sugar pills in children.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on the power of PLAYING & WORKING, the 8th of 12 keys to wellness drawn from the Wellness Inventory whole person assessment program. Most of our daily life falls under one of these two categories. For us adults, the majority of time is usually spent focused on work with far too little time allowed for play. What passes for play for most adults is more likely to be escape activities-- distraction from the responsibilities of work. Many people turn to the entertainment industry instead of engaging in the joyful, creative, spontaneous play that is vital to our wellbeing.

Simply Well
People tend to lose sight of the value of their work, getting so caught up in the details that they forget what they are doing or why they are doing it. In "Work Well" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., provides tips for making changes in your relationship to your job so it will satisfy you more deeply.

Healthy Computing
We are often captured by the computer and sit for hours without leaving our workstation. This immobile work style may contribute to our discomfort. In "Move and Sway" Erik Peper Ph.D. and Katherine Hughes Gibney explain how health at the computer is improved by reducing stress and avoiding immobility.

MIGRASPRAY - ADVERTISEMENT

RAPID RELIEF FOR MIGRAINES - WORKS IN MINUTES, NOT HOURS!

MigraSpray is a patented over-the-counter homeopathic drug intended to be a comprehensive approach for the treatment and prevention of migraine headaches. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo, controlled clinical trial, 88% of patients received relief of symptoms in an average of less than 7 minutes. In an ongoing clinical trial 90% of patients using MigraSpray on a continual daily basis had their migraine headache attacks eliminated.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Integrative Dentistry
It is not unusual for menopausal women to exhibit an increased amount of cavities, alterations in taste, gum disease and brittle jaw bone. In "Menopause and Oral Care" Flora Parsa Stay, D.D.S. explains the correlation with decreased salivary gland function, stress, and osteoporosis. She urges women to find a dentist who is aware of the symptoms associated with menopause and women's special dental needs.

Healthy Alternatives
Fasting is nature's ancient, universal "remedy" for many problems. In "Nutritional Program for Fasting" Elson M. Haas, M.D. shows how fasting can be both a useful personal tool and an important therapy. Most of the problems for which he recommends fasting as treatment are ones that result from overnutrition rather than malnutrition.

Healthy Woman Update
Endometriosis is the presence of uterine tissue outside its usual location on the inner lining of the uterus. Pain, abnormal menstrual bleeding, infertility and prolonged disability may result. In "Endometriosis" David L. Hoffmann, B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. points out that this is a notoriously difficult condition to diagnose, though up to 25% of women of childbearing age are affected by it. In mild or moderate cases herbal medication has much to offer for stress and pain, but in severe cases surgery may be indicated.

Healthy Tips for High-Level Wellness
There are hundreds of thousands of new cases of breast cancer each year. In "An Ounce of Prevention" Cherie Calbom, M.S. shares the history of breast cancer in her family and reminds us to think about our health exams, our lifestyle, our exercise habits, our stress level, and about what we put in our mouth -- all the things that can prevent cancer of the breast as well as a host of other cancers. Cherie explains how beta-carotene has received the most press, but alpha-carotene is now believed to be even more powerful in protecting our cells. Our best sources of this vital nutrient include: carrots, pumpkin, chlorella, squashes, wheatgrass, and yellow, orange, and red peppers. She recommends juicing vegetables as one way we can get a concentration of these important carotenes.
