Acupuncture for Migraine Should Be Considered by the NHS
Acupuncture can help patients with chronic headache and is relatively cost effective. All patients in a recent study completed a diary of headache and medication use for four weeks at the start of the study and then again at three months and one year. Patients receiving acupuncture experienced 22 fewer days of headache per year, used 15% less medication, made 25% fewer visits to their physician, and took 15% fewer days off sick than controls.
Yoga Helpful to Some Fighting Cancer
Many Americans who have cancer have rushed through their daily grind until they are brought up short by a disease which wreaked havoc on their physical and emotional lives. A growing number of hospitals and other organizations are rediscovering the benefits of yoga as a strategy for stress management. Research has shown that yoga can be used to control physiological functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism, body temperature, brain waves and other bodily functions.
Managing Pain with Therapy for Mind and Body
Chronic pain zaps you emotionally and physically. Instead of enjoying family, work and everyday life, your focus shifts to how much you hurt. Cognitive behavior therapy is a technique to help people with chronic pain refocus, changing the physical and mental response to chronic pain. The goal is to improve the quality of life, even when total pain relief isn't possible.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING
CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on the power of FINDING MEANING, the 11th of 12 keys to wellness drawn from the Wellness Inventory whole person assessment program. Finding meaning appears to be a unique human need. It is one of the most complex uses of energy in that it involves almost all of the previous energy forms. Since the beginning of time philosophers have asked these basic questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? What do I want? What is real? What is true? This section encourages you to find a deeper meaning in your life that can provide a powerful focus for directing your life-energy.
Simply Well
The noise pollution of modern society grows more strident every year. Rest and quiet are necessary when you are healing from illness, as well as when you simply want to renew yourself. In "Cultivate Sanity through Silence" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., offers you helpful hints for how you can nourish yourself in a quieter home by eliminating some unnecessary noise.

Tat Tvam Asi (that t'vahm Ah-see)
I See the Other in Myself and Myself in Others
I am that involves looking at everything in the world, everyone else in the world, and realizing that you are looking at another version of yourself. You and I are the same. Everything is the same. I am that, you are that, all this is that. We are all mirrors for others, and if we are able to be present, we can see ourselves in the reflection of other people. This is called the mirror of relationship. Through the mirror of relationship I discover my nonlocal self.

ALTERNATIVES
From Fatigued to Fantastic
Dr. Teitelbaum's comprehensive and aggressive metabolic approach to treatment makes fibromyalgia a very treatable disorder. In "Q and A on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia with Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D. - #10" Dr. Teitelbaum reports study results documenting enhanced quality of life and decreased pain for the participating patients.
Healthy Alternatives
Your brain often cannot distinguish whether you are imagining something or actually experiencing it. In "Rx Imagery: How to Use Your Imagination to Improve Your Health" David S. Sobel, M.D. reminds us that we can learn to use the power of our imagination to produce calming, energizing, or healing responses in our body.
Healthy Child
Asthma is an inflammatory respiratory illness characterized by mild to severe difficulty in breathing. In "Childhood Asthma" Janet Zand, L.Ac., O.M.D. reminds parents that it is important to watch your child carefully and treat him/her quickly if you notice an asthma attack coming on. Early signs of an asthma attack include an itchy throat, a change in breathing pattern, fatigue, paleness, nervousness, a runny nose, or moodiness.

Nutrition Tips
In the United States more than four billion chickens are consumed each year; that is more than fifty pounds per person. The next most common bird is turkey, which has been associated with holiday celebrations and feasts. In "Poultry and Eggs" Elson M. Haas, M.D. covers the nutritional value, calories, and cooking options, plus benefits of finding the more "natural" or "organic" chickens and eggs for consumption.
Fabulous
Functional Foods
Mashed black olives make an excellent spread or can be a topping for vegetables. The recipe for "Black Olive Mash" from Danish chef Oscar Umahro Cadogan's can also be used as a last minute stuffing for already cooked poultry. Try experimenting with the flavor by adding chili, coriander, or fresh basil leaves.

Healthy Bookstore - Caffeine Blues
If you are one of the nearly 80 percent of Americans hooked on caffeine--a natural component of coffee, tea, and chocolate and a common ingredient in drugs, soda, candy, and other products--"Caffeine Blues: Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America's #1 Drug" by Stephen Cherniske, M.S. will be a wake-up call. Cherniske gathers a substantial amount of material from scientific journals and puts it all together logically and readably. Caffeine doesn't give you energy: it borrows from the adrenals and the liver on a short-term basis and creates metabolic and neurologic stress. After spending 300 pages documenting all of caffeine's evils, Cherniske finally offers a decaffeinated life line, a step-by-step, clinically proven program to help readers kick the habit and boost energy levels naturally.

MIND-BODY-SPIRIT
Mind Over Matter
"Healing" means "to make sound or whole, or to restore to health." It also refers to causing an undesirable condition to be overcome. In the context of mind-body medicine, what affects the mind clearly and indistinguishably affects the body and visa versa. In "Healing: An Individual Perspective" Barry Bittman, M.D. points out our tendency to ignore what is really bothering us. He urges us to better deal with the issues that stress us. Take time to stop and contemplate the way we really feel. Get in touch with our feelings. Ask ourselves whether it's the issue or our perspective that's causing us pain.
Spiritual Wellness
On the subject of worldly desires, spiritual traditions are somewhat schizoid. In "The Two-Way Streetcar Named Desire" Philip Goldberg points out the divergence of approaches from self-denial to going after the things we desire with zeal. He offers tips to help self-correcting elements on the spiritual path along by nudging your desires in the right direction.
