SPONSOR - SPIRITUAL CINEMA CIRCLE

MOVIES THAT INSPIRE, HEAL AND TRANSFORM

The SPIRITUAL CINEMA CIRCLE offers a service that's unique and deeply needed. The CIRCLE gives you a way to bring hours of inspiring entertainment into your life each month, while making an important contribution to the world. In addition, it's an incredible bargain. If, like me, you love movies, but you find it harder and harder to go to theaters because of the violence, emptiness and overall lack of quality and imagination that most of the current crop represents, The CIRCLE is a wonderful opportunity.

HEALTH NEWS

New Bill Targets Herbal Supplements
A new bill, The Dietary Supplement Access and Awareness Act (HR 3156), proposes to revise the "unreasonable risk" clause of DSHEA by significantly altering FDA's burden of proving that an ingredient is unsafe for use in dietary supplements. HR 3156 would specify that "presence of even a relatively small risk of a serious adverse health effect" would be considered unreasonable in the absence of a "sufficient benefit" and would specifically permit FDA to ban any dietary supplement "even though there are uncertainties as to the levels of a dietary ingredient that may present a risk."

CDC Releases Extensive Survey of Americans' Exposure to to Environmental Chemicals
Tremendous progress has been made lowering Americans' exposure to environmental chemicals. Exposure to secondhand smoke continues to plummet and blood lead levels in children are way down. However, many challenges remain. In addition to lead and cadmium, the 2005 CDC report includes extensive data for such chemicals as mercury, lead, cadmium, and other metals; phthalates; organochlorine pesticides; organophosphate pesticides; pyrethroid insecticides; herbicides; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; dioxins and furans; polychlorinated biphenyls; and phytoestrogens. The results presented in this and future reports will help set priorities for research on human health risks resulting from exposure to environmental chemicals.

Rising Healthcare Cuts into Profits for Half of Large US Businesses
Half of large US companies said that increased healthcare costs have contributed to slower profit growth over the past 12 months and, as a result, more than three-quarters said they may ask their employees to pay a greater share of health insurance costs. Shifting a greater share of spiraling healthcare costs to employees is a trend that is likely to continue, but if employers push too far, workers may opt out of coverage altogether.

Whole Person Wellness - A 21st Century Solution
The current issue of Total Health Magazine features an article on the Wellness Inventory entitled: "Whole-Person Wellness: A 21st Century Solution" by HealthWorld President/CEO Jim Strohecker. The article, first in a two-part series, focuses on the recent reemergence of two key trends of the early wellness movement of the 1970s - "Self-Responsibility" and "Whole Person Wellness" in response to the current crisis regarding spiraling health care costs that are rising above the ability of individuals, companies, and the government to pay. The Wellness Inventory, originally created as part of the first wellness center in the US in 1975, and now greatly enhanced for 21st century needs, offers a compelling solution to our wellness needs. Next month's article will focus on "Creating a Culture of Wellness." Total Health Magazine is available by subscription and is distributed to wellness centers, health professionals and natural foods stores. Or call (888) 316-6051.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

Simply Well
Death is a fact of life. In "Make a Friend of Death" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., presents the position that with death as your friend, you might live more consciously—caring for your health and wellbeing, honoring your body as the only one you've got.

Ask Dr. Orloff About Intutive Healing
In "Step Three of Intuitive Healing: Sensing Subtle Energy" Judith Orloff, M.D. explains the dynamics of empathy: the more people per square foot, the more our energy fields intersect--thus the tendency to become overloaded in high-density areas. This aspect of intuition is the most neglected and misunderstood.

Healthy Sexuality
A lot of people have concerns about their sex life. In "Sexual Concerns" the American Institute of Preventive Medicine has compiled a list of common concerns and problems that affect one or both sex partners. Also offered are self-help tips, guidelines for evaluating the seriousness of any problems, and suggestions for treatment options.

Tips for a Healthy Summer
"First Aid for Poison Ivy" reminds you not to touch the plant, touch clothing or pets that have sap on them, or come in contact with the smoke of the burning plant. The tips instruct you what to do if you are unlucky enough to avoid these, and do get the skin rash.

MOTIVATE YOUR EMPLOYEES TO CHANGE - ADVERTISEMENT

WELLNESS INVENTORY INCREASES MOTIVATION IN YOUR EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM

A recent survey of HR and benefits managers reports that the biggest reason for lack of attendance of employee wellness programs is that they are "not sufficiently motivated." The Wellness Inventory, a wellness program that focuses on the whole person, not just on mechanical health risks, is the first program to make your own personal motivation to change the central focus. For more information on the program

The Wellness Inventory is also available direct to consumer

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Nutritional Medicine and Longevity
Vitamin B12 does not fit the mold of the deficiency diseases theory, or the one-disease-one-drug model of medicine that is taught in medical schools. The most important medical fact about vitamin B12 is that deficiency does not show up only as anemia. In "Vitamin B12: Under Appreciated" Richard A. Kunin, M.D. details important facts, including nerve and brain symptoms which need to be treated promptly or the damage may be permanent.

Healthy Alternatives
The intent of acupuncture therapy is to promote health and alleviate pain and suffering. In "Acupuncture Facts" the California State Oriental Medicine Association has compiled a brief overview of how acupuncture works, the limits of this therapy, how to choose an acupuncturist, and what to expect during a treatment session.

Dr. Christine Horner's Natural Secrets for Breast Health
Significantly lowering your risk of breast cancer isn't difficult. In "Breast Health Tip #3: B Vitamins" Christine Horner, M.D., F.A.C.S explains how two types of B vitamins -- folic acid and B12 -- help to lower the risk of breast cancer by protecting your DNA from making mistakes that can lead to cancer.

Find an Alternative Healthcare Professional
The Professional Referral Network contains searchable directories for 20 leading professional associations in complementary and integrative health care, with over 17,000 professionals. HEALTHY KITCHEN

Nutrition Tips
You normally think of using seasonings to enhance the flavor of food. In "Seasonings" Elson M. Haas, M.D. explains how many herbs and spices can be used for medicinal purposes, such as stimulating the appetite or aiding digestion. He details salt, extracts, peppers, condiments, herbs and spices, and sweeteners.

Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine offers you a vegetarian recipe for "Hummus Sandwich Spread."

INDIVIDUALIZED HEALTH SOLUTIONS - ADVERTISEMENT

VITAMINS BASED ON YOUR BODY'S NEEDS, NOT RDA's

There is no more need for confusion about the vitamins and minerals your body personally needs. One-size-fits-all vitamin formulas are last century's technology. Individualized formulas based on your unique biochemical needs are now possible and affordable.

With over 30,000 genes each person is Bio-Chemically unique. After 20 years of clinical research, on over 20,000 clients, analyzing over 100 vital blood, tissue and urine tests a group of scientists can now determine each individual's basic nutrient needs.

"There is no more guess work involved - now you can take control of your health with the Signature Supplement individualized nutritional program." says Gary D. Sandman, president of Individual Health Solutions, llc. "We can now provide you with an individualized nutritionally bio-matched multi-vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement to help maintain your youthfulness and optimize your health and wellbeing. You can feel the difference bio-matched vitamins do for you." As featured on recent NBC newscasts.

MIND-BODY-SPIRIT

Mind Over Matter
While physicians of our era do not use Star Wars type miniature diagnostic scanning modules the size of Palm Pilots, doctors are now offering comprehensive whole body CT (computerized tomography) scans to detect diseases before they're otherwise apparent...even for their healthiest patients. The people who can afford these procedures are convinced such screening can actually benefit them by detecting early signs of disease. In "Beam me up, Scotty: Technology at a Cost" Barry Bittman, M.D. addresses two elements needed prior to offering routine CT scans to the public; research to determine the cost-effectiveness of CT scanning in disease prevention, and reducing the cost of the procedure.

Wholistic Spiritual Healing
There are many terms for those who offer treatments and those who seek them. Each has its own tradition and shapes the relationships of the caregivers and careseekers in subtle but pervasive ways In "The Healing Potential in a Word (Part 4)" Daniel J. Benor, M.D. encourages people receiving care to be active, resonsible participants. They are to ask lots of questions and look for what they can do to improve their own condition.
