Research Backs Theory That Vitamin C Shrinks Tumours
New research suggesting that vitamin C can be effective in
curing cancer will renew interest in the "alternative"
treatment for the terminal disease. Three cancer patients
who were given large intravenous doses over a period of
several months had their lives extended and their tumours
shrunk. Studies show that vitamin C is toxic to some cancer
cells but not to normal cells. The problem has been
delivering a high enough dose.
71 Congressional Representatives Urge Budget Increase For Renewable Energy
A letter to the U.S. Department of Energy from 71
congressional representatives stresses the need to restore
funding for the geothermal, hydropower, and key energy
efficiency accounts targeted for deep cuts or elimination by
the White House in its Fiscal Year 2007 budget request. Even
at the levels proposed, funding for the nation's renewable
energy and energy efficiency programs would still be well
below the levels authorized by the Energy Policy Act of
2005.
Third Mad Cow Case In Us Raises Questions About Testing
As officials confirm the third confirmed case of mad cow
disease in the US since December 2003, public-interest
groups urge more systematic monitoring. What appears to be a
relatively isolated incident points out the difficulty of
preventing - or even detecting - such cases under the
current voluntary testing regimen. The news also makes it
more difficult for US officials to convince overseas
consumers that American beef is safe.

EDITOR'S PICK - NATIONAL HEALTH, WELLNESS & PREVENTION CONGRESS
WHO'S DRAWING THE WELLNESS AND PREVENTION MAP FOR CONSUMER DRIVEN HEALTH CARE?
Wellness, prevention, disease management, and fitness
professionals must understand the evolving marketplace and
help shape how consumers access healthcare information and
services.
Opportunities and risks abound as the healthcare landscape
redesigns itself. The traditional provider-centric system
is under fire from empowered consumers. New technologies
afford consumers direct access to healthcare information.
New services and products offer the consumer more choice,
convenience and control. Where and what is the "new
primary" care? From the workplace, to the hospital, to the
fitness center and spa to the retail marketplace..where do
consumers go to meet their health, disease state management
and wellness needs? Co-located with the Consumer Direct
Heatlh Care Congress in San Francisco, CA May 8-10.
Join HealthWorld Online President, James Strohecker, who
will chair the preconference workshop, "The New Healthy
Living Consumer: Looking Outside the Healthcare Box for
Health & Wellness Solutions", and 4 leading industry
experts, Monday May 8.

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on SENSING, the third of 12
keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. It is through
the senses--seeing, touching, smelling, hearing,
tasting--that we come to know and enjoy the world. Our
abilities to work, to feel pleasure, to communicate with
others, and to impact the world are directly related to our
abilities to appreciate and use our sensory input
efficiently and creatively.
Simply Well
Many languages use the same word for both breath and spirit,
or life force. In "Breathe for Life" John W. Travis, M.D.,
M.P.H., encourages you to start paying attention to your
breathing as a form of relaxation, stress reduction, and
healing. Breathing consciously not only will relieve tension
and help quiet any fear, it can also relieve pain. So before
you reach for the aspirins, the antacid tablets, or the
telephone to call your doctor, do some breathing.
Ask Dr. Orloff About Intuitive Healing
We all have a choice about our health. In "Step One of
Intuitive Healing: Notice Your Beliefs" Judith Orloff, M.D.
reminds us that our mind and body are linked by an intricate
intuitive circuitry. Notice the pattern of any recurring
beliefs or emotions that occur before an illness. They may
well be premonitions. We need to be aware of our thinking,
notice when fear takes over, and begin to reprogram our
thoughts.

ALTERNATIVES
Integrative Dentistry
Throughout her life span a woman has a sequence of health
issues that can adversely impact her dental health. In
"Special Oral Health Care Needs of Women" Flora Parsa Stay,
D.D.S. outlines the special cautions for women who are
dieting, women on birth control pills, pregnant women, and
women treating for breast cancer and the potential
correlating dental problems that might develop. For those in
middle years and during menopause there are still other
issues. This important information can prepare you for
taking precautions.
Healthy Alternatives
How fast and how dramatically we age has a great deal to do
with impaired circulatory efficiency. If arteries could be
kept supple, prevented from hardening and narrowing, the
free flow of blood would be assured and both the risk of a
rapid degree of ageing as well as many diseases associated
with age In "Chelation Therapy: Is it Natural?" Leon
Chaitow, N.D., D.O., M.R.O. presents the case that chelation
therapy offers these benefits.
Dr. Christine Horner's Natural Secrets for Breast Health
Estimates are that every year the average American eats
almost his or her entire body weight in sugar. In "Breast
Health Tip #21: Avoid Sugar" Christine Horner, M.D.,
F.A.C.S reports that sugar and refined carbohydrates cause a
surge in insulin and women with the highest insulin levels
have a 283% higher incidence of breast cancer. The more
sugar you eat, the faster cancer cells grow and the greater
the blow to your immune system.
Healthy Man Update
Couples having fertility problems will find that
technological advances are accompanied by high costs. In
"Three Ways To Increase Fertility" Lauri M. Aesoph, N.D.
presents a simpler and less expensive naturopathic approach
to infertility. This includes kicking the smoking habit,
reducing body fat, and paying attention to nature's cycles.
Find an Alternative Healthcare
Professional
The Professional Referral Network contains searchable
directories for 20 leading professional associations in
complementary and integrative health care, with over 17,000
professionals. Looking for a healthcare professional
specializing in homeopathy? The Homeopathy section includes

LOHAS CONFERENCE - ADVERTISEMENT
JOIN US FOR LOHAS 10 APRIL 26-28th, SANTA MONICA
LOHAS 10 is a three-day business conference that brings
together leaders from Fortune 500 companies, LOHAS
businesses, the entertainment industry, and celebrities to
focus on how businesses, media and entertainment can be
leveraged to educate, shape and influence consumer behavior
and purchasing decisions while promoting lifestyles of
health and sustainability. If you or your business is
involved in conscious commerce, this is an event that should
not be missed.
Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) describes a
$226.8 billion U.S. marketplace for goods and services
focused on health, the environment, social justice, personal
development and sustainable living. The consumers attracted
to this market have been collectively referred to as
Cultural Creatives and represent a sizable group in this
country. Approximately 30 percent of the adults in the U.S.,
or 63 million people, are currently considered LOHAS
consumers.
MIND-BODY-SPIRIT
The Healer Within
Because we are generally addicted to complexity and
busyness, reaching a state of authentic relaxation is a
challenge. The beauty of progressive relaxation processes is
their simplicity and their ability to allow the mind to have
an easy focus. In "Progressive Relaxation, Option III" Dr.
Roger Jahnke presents advanced relaxation and meditation
methods which include concentration, focus, intention and
visualization that are used to regulate the body function,
move the Qi or energy to specific areas of the body and even
project the energy outside the body.
Music and Wellness
In "One Happy Family: Notes of Camaraderie" Barry Bittman,
M.D. relates the story of an elementary school music teacher
in western Pennsylvania, who combines love for children with
opportunities for recreational music-making that builds
bridges on solid foundations of camaraderie, caring,
nurturing and creative expression. Perhaps if every child in
our nation began each day with an interactive program that
taught tolerance, respect and appreciation for one another,
we would not have school violence.
