Massage Therapy Beneficial For Arthritis Pains
A considerable number of people suffering from arthritis are
turning to alternative therapies, specifically massage
therapy, to alleviate the pain and discomforts associated
with the condition. Massage therapy utilizes the human
system's innate ability to heal any ailment through manual
manipulation and the engenderment of the relaxation
response. For arthritis sufferers any amount of stress or
anxiety can exacerbate an already unpleasant physical
situation.
Over 13,000 Surgeries A Day In The U.S. - How Many Are Prepared For Recovery?
While the surgery is deemed a success, the challenge of
transition back into daily life is a commonly neglected
issue of recuperation. Somebody who lives a high-speed life
is often ill-prepared for the pain, the boredom, and the
depression that may follow a trauma.
Obesity Levels In U.S. States Are Grossly Underestimated
The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. states has been
greatly underestimated. Because people tend to provide
incorrect information about their weight and height,
especially in telephone surveys, the researchers concluded
that estimates of obesity in individual states have been too
low, by more than 50%. The corrected prevalence of obesity
in the U.S. population is now estimated as 28.7% for adult
men and 34.5% for adult women.

WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
Continuing Our 12-Stage Journey to Wellness
This week our journey focuses on the power of PLAYING &
WORKING, the 8th of 12 keys to wellness drawn from the
Wellness Inventory whole person assessment program. Most of
our daily life falls under one of these two categories. For
us adults, the majority of time is usually spent focused on
work with far too little time allowed for play. What passes
for play for most adults is more likely to be escape
activities-- distraction from the responsibilities of work.
Many people turn to the entertainment industry instead of
engaging in the joyful, creative, spontaneous play that is
vital to our wellbeing.
Simply Well
Goal setting is a dynamic tool for getting things done, and
helps you clarify what is important in your life. In "Set
Goals for the Changes You Want to Make" John W. Travis,
M.D., M.P.H., explains the power in setting goals, and shows
you how to tap into that power.
Keeping Fit
Sedentary adults typically add 10 pounds of bodyweight every
decade during the midlife years. However, this unfavorable
weight change results from a 5-pound loss of muscle and a
15-pound gain in fat. In other words, what appears to be a
10-pound weight problem is actually a 20-pound body
composition problem. In "Strength Training Benefits: The
First Step In Reaching The Sedentary 90 Percent" Wayne L.
Westcott, Ph.D. reports that 25 minutes of standard strength
training, two or three days a week, can increase previously
inactive adults' muscle mass by about three pounds in two to
three months of training. What's more, research reveals that
three pounds of new muscle tissue increases resting
metabolism by 6 to 8 percent, which represents an additional
100 to 120 calories per day.

ALTERNATIVES
Understanding Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating the
average case of mumps, and help reduce the chances of
complications. In "Mumps" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. outlines
common symptoms related to mumps, and suggests the
appropriate homeopathic remedy for each.
Healthy Alternatives
The five seasons of life correspond to the five elements and
each of those movements have gifts to bestow on us and
others, if we can observe and accept them. In "The Five
Movements of Life" Robert Duggan explains the fundamental
way in which the Chinese understand and observe life. These
movements describe a continual cycle of energy--rising,
falling, and rising again.
Women's Health Detective
A number of people find they can't drink caffeinated drinks
after noon because it keeps them from getting a good night's
sleep. In "This Caffeinated Beverage Reduces Anxiety and
Lowers Blood Pressure" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. offers green
tea as the exception to this rule. It can give you the
positive qualities of caffeine — like mental alertness —
along with the benefits of l-theanine.
Holistic Healthcare For Children
In "Fast Food And Asthma" Randall Neustaedter, O.M.D. notes
several studies that explored the association between fast
food and asthma in children. Results showed that the more
fast-food consumed the higher the incidence of asthmatic
signs and symptoms.
Healthy Woman Update
One of the reasons medicine does not accept the "yeast
syndrome" is because the problem arises predominantly as a
side effect from the use of commonly prescribed
drugs—antibiotics, birth control pills, and corticosteroids.
In "Nutritional Program For Yeast Syndrome" Elson M. Haas,
M.D. provides diagnosis tips and a three-faceted approach to
treatment.

Healthy Bookstore - The Inflammation Revolution
With the newly found risks of many anti-inflammatory drugs
continuing to make headlines, it has become vital for
millions of arthritis sufferers, asthmatics, and others with
inflammation-related disorders to find safer options. In

Arthritis, Asthma & Other Inflammatory Disorders" by Georges
M. Halpern, M.D., Ph.D. readers can learn how marine lipids

Raw Food Materia Medica
Brussels sprouts are a member of the Mustard Family and
related to cauliflower and radish. They are alkalinizing,
antioxidant and liver stimulating and have a special
affinity for the pancreas. Brussels sprouts have been used
to remedy acidosis, arteriosclerosis, constipation, bleeding
gums, and high cholesterol. They are a good source of
beta-carotene, vitamin B6, folic acid, C, flavonoids
calcium, iron, and phosphorus. They also contain indoles
that are believed to prevent breast cancer by blocking the
activity of estrogens that contribute to tumor growth. They
are also considered preventative to colon cancer and
promoting to good bowel health, due to their high fiber
content.
Fabulous Functional Foods
Imagine a bread every bit as substantial and savory as
wholegrain bread, but containing no grains. Danish chef
Oscar Umahro Cadogan brings us this recipe for "Hazelnut
Bread" which is suitable for people allergic to gluten,
those following the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet," and those
following other low carbohydrate diets. The large amount of
flaxseed provides plenty of Omega-3 PUFAs and
phytoestrogens.

Mind Over Matter
You can predict well in advance of any foreseeable outcome
whether or not an individual is likely to succeed in the
face of a significant challenge. In "A Healthy Attitude:
Food for Thought" Barry Bittman, M.D. details a healthy
attitude, based on the three basic elements:
comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness as
defined by Aaron Antonovsky, a medical sociologist and
researcher.
Music and Wellness
Entrainment is the law of synchronization that causes two
separate rhythms to naturally line up when placed near one
another. Is this an explanation as to why cultures
throughout history have included drumming in their rituals,
celebrations, and ceremonies? In "The ART of Drum Circles"
learn how drum circles seem to tap into the primal need to
share and support one another through one of the simplest
and most beautiful ways to connect without words; music.
This is one of a series of articles by Christine Stevens,
author, music therapist and Director of Music Therapy and

CELTIC MYSTICAL JOURNEYS - ADVERTISEMENT
PASSAGES FROM THE CELTIC MYSTICAL TRAVEL JOURNAL OF FINBARR ROSS AND THE BUTTERFLY TOURS
Ireland: This last trip to Ireland was magical! We
encountered an ancient Goddess at Newgrange, as well as the
Goddess Aine at Lough Gur, Saint Brigid in Kildare and again
the Goddess at the stone circle in Kenmare. We experienced
the extraordinary peace and harmonious marriage of the
masculine and the feminine at the ancient monastery
Glendalough. We also found the site of Tara particularly
powerful this time, which is considered the ancient seat of
the high kings of Ireland and the home of the Druids. We
then journeyed to the Druids Altar where we all participated
in a life-changing water initiation. Each traveler
experienced the ice cold waters bubbling up from this
ancient temple well, and we each left feeling lighter and
clearer with a sense that our lives had become more
purposeful. To view our sacred journeys to Ireland this
year click on: www.celticmysticaljourneys.com/ireland.htm
