Prince Charles Urges Boycott of Bioengineered Foods
The Prince of Wales suggested consumers should boycott genetically-modified food imported into Britain in a renewed attack Wednesday on bioengineered produce. Following his public assault in June on genetically-modified food, which he said he would neither eat nor give to his family or guests, Prince Charles called on British consumers to take action themselves.
New Health-care Rights Extended to 90 Million Americans
President Bill Clinton, who made overhauling the nation's health-care system a cornerstone of his first-term agenda, signed an executive order Friday to extend greater patient protections to 90 million Americans. By the end of 1999 all companies seeking to insure federal employees and their families through group plans must permit customers to choose the specialists they select and allow them to challenge any denial of benefits by their health maintenance organization, or HMO.

Dr. Galland's Integrated Medicine
A large body of research over the past ninety years has demonstrated the preventive value of eating foods fermented with Lactobacilli or their cousins, Bifidobacteria. Eating these friendly bacteria prevents intestinal infection due to viruses or pathogenic bacteria and preserves intestinal permeability in the face of infection or other types of injury, can prevent antibiotic-induced diarrhea and travelers diarrhea and can lower serum cholesterol levels, according to Leo Galland, M.D., in his latest column, "Friendly Bacteria". Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria also show anti-cancer activity, by two mechanisms: they inhibit the growth or activity of cancer-promoting bacteria and some strains actually produce chemicals which inhibit tumor growth.
Mind Body Health Newsletter
Most illnesses result from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, behavioral, and psychosocial factors. Rarely is any one of these factors the sole cause of a disease. For example, many people exposed to germs do not develop illness. Many suffer psychological stress and trauma and stay healthy. Our understanding of most diseases is still quite primitive, reports Dr. David Sobel his latest column, "The Mind/Body Guilt Syndrome." We know very little about why some people exposed to stressors such as germs and traumatic experiences become ill while others remain healthy. Mind matters, but mind cannot always triumph over matter. Sometimes the biology of disease is simply overwhelming. Your inability to prevent it or recover is seldom due to "negative" thoughts, "bad" emotions, or lack of a right mental attitude.

ingredients in the less-toxic cleaning arsenal. Tea tree oil is a

washing soda is the best petroleumm solvent substitute there is: it is
very alkaline÷even caustic (wear gloves)÷and the material of choice
for engine oil spills, removing floor wax and other difficult
problems. Find out how to use these and other ingredients to kill
mildew, clean drains, remove blood stains, and more, in the latest

Children's
Health Update
Emotional upset-whether anger, sadness, or fear-is a normal response to different stresses in a child's life. Children may not be able to express in words exactly what it is they are feeling. Instead, they may show their feelings by acting out in anger, by withdrawing, or by displaying physical symptoms such as vague abdominal pain, fatigue, or headache. Physical signs of stress can also include dizzy spells; a racing pulse; sweaty palms, feet, or face, not associated with physical activity; chronic headaches; trembling; hives; and insomnia. In her article "Emotional Upset," excerpted from her book, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child, Dr. Janet Zand outlines a comprehensive program for helping your child have a healthy emotional life, including guidelines for conventional treatment, as well as dietary guidelines, recommended nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathic remedies, acupressure and Bach Flower remedies.
