CDC Urges Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities to Increase Efforts to Reduce Drug-Resistant Infections
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new
guidelines outlining strategies to prevent the spread of drug-resistant
infections in healthcare settings. The new guidelines seek to halt the
rising rates of drug-resistant infections by calling on hospitals and other
healthcare facilities to make comprehensive infection control programs a
priority and to take aggressive steps to reduces rates of drug resistance.
Childhood Obesity Linked To Youngsters Staying Up Too Late
Children today get fewer hours of sleep than in the past and less than they
need, which can disrupt hormones that help control weight gain. Researchers
blame TV viewing, computer games and mobile phones for keeping children up
later and affecting the quality of their sleep. Parents need to impose
stricter controls on their children's sleeping routines, which could
include removing electronic gadgets from the bedroom.
Fish Consumption Presents More Risks Than Benefits, Doctors Say
The risks associated with fish consumption outweigh potential benefits, say
dietitians and doctors with the Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine. While fish does provide high levels of omega-3 fatty acid, a
"good" fat thought to help with cardiovascular health, most consumers don't
realize that all fats have the same caloric content. "Good" fats are just
as likely to help one pack on the pounds as bad fats.

EDITOR'S PICK - SPIRITUAL CINEMA CIRCLE
MOVIES THAT INSPIRE, HEAL AND TRANSFORM
The SPIRITUAL CINEMA CIRCLE offers a service that's unique and deeply
needed. The CIRCLE gives you a way to bring hours of inspiring
entertainment into your life each month, while making an important
contribution to the world. In addition, it's an incredible bargain. If,
like me, you love movies, but you find it harder and harder to go to
theaters because of the violence, emptiness and overall lack of quality and
imagination that most of the current crop represents, The CIRCLE is a
wonderful opportunity.
WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on BREATHING & RELAXING, the second of 12
keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. We can survive for many weeks
without food, several days without water, but without air, life ceases in a
matter of minutes. When the air is clear, your lungs strong, your body
relaxed, and your mind at peace, you experience total wellbeing.
Simply Well
Death is a fact of life. In "Make a Friend of Death" John W. Travis, M.D.,
M.P.H., presents the position that with death as your friend, you might
live more consciously—caring for your health and wellbeing, honoring your
body as the only one you've got.
Keeping Fit
If you are an average adult, you probably qualify for being a
time-pressured person. If this is the case, one of the things you may not
do that you should do is exercise. Six out of ten adults lead totally
sedentary lifestyles. Only one out of ten adults performs sufficient
physical activity to attain measurable fitness benefits. No wonder a
university study showed that 75 percent of American adults are overweight.
Approximately the same percentage of men and women will experience low back
pain, and about 50 percent will die from heart disease. In "Brief Exercise
Sessions For Time-Pressured People" Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. provides a
simple answer with a special one-hour per week exercise program for
time-pressured people.

NATURAL
ALTERNATIVES
Understanding Homeopathy
Once it is determined that surgery is medically necessary, homeopathic
medicines can reduce complications of surgery and augment healing so that
people can recover more quickly afterward. In "Pre-Surgical and
Post-Surgical Treatment" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. outlines a number of
homeopathic remedies that have been shown to assist the patient deal with
the fear and/or anxiety often experienced prior to and after surgery, and
those helpful for preventing infection, minimizing bleeding, and reducing
surgical shock.
Healthy Alternatives
Are you baffled with the behavior of your feline pet? In "To Your Animal's
Emotional Health (Cats)" Penny Case shares two practical solutions for
using flower essences to help life be better for troubled cats.
Women's Health Detective
If you're like most women and take 1,500 mg of calcium and half as much
magnesium, you've got it all backwards. You're getting too much calcium and
not enough magnesium. In "How Calcium and Magnesium Can Slow Down Aging"
Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. shares important facts. Magnesium is needed to
carry calcium into your bones. The same ratio of calcium to magnesium you
take to keep your bones strong and flexible will also keep you young at
heart. When you're under stress, increase your magnesium and keep calcium
levels reasonable, not high.
Holistic Healthcare For Children
The number of children put on drugs for attention problems is staggering.
In "Homeopathy Proven Successful For ADHD" Randall Neustaedter, O.M.D.
offers an effective management system for attention problems (so-called ADD
and ADHD). An important component of this system includes the prescription
of constitutional homeopathic medicines according the principles of
classical homeopathy.
Healthy Woman Update
What you eat has a major influence on your health. Considering that bone is
living tissue, just like the rest of the body, it is likely that what you
put in your mouth will determine in part how strong your bones will be. In
"Osteoporosis - What You Eat Affects Your Bones" Alan R. Gaby, M.D.
explains that bone tissue has diverse nutritional needs and engages in
complex interactions with the rest of the body. He notes circumstantial
evidence that the typical American diet promotes the development of
osteoporosis.

Mind Over Matter
People, especially older folks, generally don't talk about being depressed.
The symptoms of depression vary considerably and are hard to diagnose,
especially when growing older for some seems to imply that these symptoms
are expected to occur. In "Depression: Key Insights for the Elderly - Part
II" Barry Bittman, M.D. charges each of us with the responsibility to
uncover depression of loved-ones, co-workers and friends. Urge them to seek
professional assistance. Caution that the cure is rarely a pill. Suggest
counseling, getting out to see other people, and a healthy prescription of
laughter and music.
Music and Wellness
In the interview "On the Healing Power of Music" with Dr. Daniel Redwood,
Steven Halpern elaborates on his view that music conveys a vibrational
essence with important implications for health and healing. He discusses
the phenomenon of entrainment, in which the human heart involuntarily
synchronizes its beat to the rhythm supplied by external stimuli.
