HEALTH
NEWS
Sunshine, Vitamin D May Prevent Influenza
Vitamin D, or rather a lack of it, may have something to do with the
regular flaring up of influenza in the winter months. We know all about the
need to supply the vitamin - either by exposure to sunshine or by
supplements - to avoid rickets and brittle bones. D takes available calcium
from softer tissues, shunts it to the bones and helps to fix the mineral
there. But the theory that vitamin D could determine whether we catch the
flu or not is throwing the medical world into a slight commotion.
Flouride: It's Bad For Your Teeth, as the American Dental Association Admit
Fluoride is bad for your teeth. It's something you probably already know,
but now the august American Dental Association is agreeing with you. In a
recent position paper, it warns mothers against preparing baby foods with
fluoridated water as it may be bad for the development of babies' teeth.
Eliminate 90% of the Pesticides In Your Diet--Boycott Dirty Dozen & Buy Organic
Food scares in recent months - from E. coli in spinach to toxins in fish -
have a growing number of consumers buying organic food. Organic is better
when it comes to 12 fruits and vegetables that typically contain higher
levels of pesticides. Health-conscious consumers also may want to seek
organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy.

WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on the power of PLAYING & WORKING, the 8th of
12 keys to wellness drawn from the Wellness Inventory whole person
assessment program. Most of our daily life falls under one of these two
categories. For us adults, the majority of time is usually spent focused on
work with far too little time allowed for play. What passes for play for
most adults is more likely to be escape activities-- distraction from the
responsibilities of work. Many people turn to the entertainment industry
instead of engaging in the joyful, creative, spontaneous play that is vital
to our wellbeing.
Simply Well
It is true that your words create your world. As you look around your
surroundings, you are talking to yourself about everything you see. Your
language structures your reality. In "Watch Your Words" John W. Travis,
M.D., M.P.H., documents self-programming that heals - based on research in
the field of psychoneuroimmunology that verifies that thoughts and emotions
directly affect the strength of the immune system.
Healthy
Computing
Interested in how to decrease tension and increase flexibility? In "Play
With Your Feet" Erik Peper, Ph.D. learn how to regenerate and increase
flexibility in your neck, back, and hips by changing the habitual movement
patterns of your feet and toes

DR. ANDREW WEIL'S MIND-BODY TOOL KIT
The evidence is overwhelming: you can tap the power of your mind to
directly influence your health, using clinically proven tools that anyone
can master.
With Dr. Andrew Weil's Mind-Body Tool Kit, listeners join the best-selling
author along with three renowned colleagues and friends - all leading
specialists in alternative medicine - to experience a potent prescription
of self-healing practices.
NATURAL
ALTERNATIVES
Nutritional Medicine and Longevity
CoQ is required for cell energy. It strengthens the immune system,
conferring greater resistance to infection, not due to increased numbers of
white blood cells but greater potency of the existing cells. In "Coenzyme
Q10: A Miracle Vitamin" Richard A. Kunin, M.D. notes that tissue levels of
CoQ decline as much as 80% in old age. This single fact appears to explain
some of the increased risk of heart failure, immune dysfunction, delayed
healing and general weakening of energy and strength that are stereotypical
of growing old. By simply taking supplements of CoQ, this age-related drop
in vitality can be reversed to an amazing extent.
Healthy Alternatives
In "Childhood Ear Infections" Viola Frymann, D.O., F.A.A.O., F.C.A.
explains why we cannot localize ear infection in an ear because it is tied
in to other parts of the body. This is the time to go back structurally and
inquire whether there is any evidence of injury at birth which may have
started the process, and whether there had been any injuries since then to
which the child is now responding with this susceptibility to infection.
Women's Health Detective
Recent studies are pointing to chronic inflammation as being a major risk
factor for heart disease. Unfortunately, because inflammation can be
painless it frequently goes undetected. In "Inflammation – The Silent
Killer (Part One)" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. notes that diet is better than
drugs, but some foods reduce inflammation while others promote it. If you
suspect you have chronic inflammation anywhere in your body, talk with your
doctor about a blood test that measures the levels of a particular protein
called C-reactive protein (CRP).
Holistic Healthcare For Children
Impaired digestive function is one of the most common problems of the first
three to six months of life. Although many infants grow out of these
symptoms on their own as the digestive tract matures, in "Treating Reflux
(Gerd) In Infants" Randall Neustaedter, O.M.D. offers parents several forms
of treatment that can soothe the symptoms and normalize the digestive
function of their infants.
Healthy Woman Update
In this world, we all are faced with the effects of a stressful lifestyle.
In "Natural Medicine For Insomnia" Janet Zand, L.Ac., O.M.D. discusses one
of the "stress" symptoms most commonly seen by health care practitioners
and offers herbal solutions.
