HEALTH NEWS

Statins Too Many People Are Taking Them (And They're Doing Far Less Good Than You Think)
Cholesterol-lowering statins have become one of the most popular 'just in case' drugs on the market. They're handed out to anyone who may be at risk from developing heart disease – which, in the eyes of the doctor, will be pretty much everyone over the age of 50 or so. A new study suggests that far too many people are taking a statin, and with no positive outcome.

Author, Author: Drug Companies Keep The Real Researchers Under Wraps
Medical trials are a vital part of drug marketing. With a positive result, the manufacturer can press even harder to get the drug more widely prescribed. Unfortunately, most trials are funded by the drug company, and they are prepared and written by the company's employees. In a recent review of 44 medical trials, in 33 the true authors were never revealed. And, to a man, they worked for the drug company who would benefit from the favorable study.

Antidepressants: The Baddest of The Bad is Revealed
Antidepressants are a family of drugs that are bad and dangerous to know – and now researchers have named Effexor (venlafaxine) as the baddest of the bad. Patients are much more likely to attempt suicide while taking Effexor than any of the other antidepressants. The news comes as no surprise to those who've already been exposed to the drug. It's considered to be one of the most powerful antidepressants, and one of the hardest to tolerate. In fact, around 19 per cent of patients stop taking the drug early because they can't stand the side effects.

EDITOR'S PICK - INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE FOR HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS

REGISTER NOW - INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE FOR HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS CONFERENCE

Integrative medicine is more than giving patients the options of complementary and alternative medicine therapies. It means creating a truly patient-centered environment in which individuals are able to reach their optimal health.

The fifth annual integrative medicine conference to be held April 12-14 in San Diego, CA will enable you to spot opportunities for integrative medicine and assist you in cultivating a better healing environment. Health care leaders from all over the nation and from a variety of settings will share their stories and offer practical techniques that you can apply to your organization or community.

The three-day program has been customized to provide you and your team with top-notch educational sessions, including in-depth case studies, skill-building workshops, on-site visits to a successful integrative medicine center and a healing hospital, a diverse and interactive exhibit forum, poster board presentations and ample time for networking.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on SENSING, the third of 12 keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. It is through the senses--seeing, touching, smelling, hearing, tasting--that we come to know and enjoy the world. Our abilities to work, to feel pleasure, to communicate with others, and to impact the world are directly related to our abilities to appreciate and use our sensory input efficiently and creatively.

Simply Well
With the experts disagreeing among themselves, it's no wonder that nutrition has become almost as controversial as religion or politics. In "Develop Personal Nutritional Awareness" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., guides you to develop awareness of your body and its nutritional needs. You learn to observe what types and quantities of food and what eating environments support your overall wellbeing, and which don't.

Keeping Fit
Due to shorter days, less physical activity, and abundant holiday meals, winter is a time when most adults experience increasing bodyweight and decreasing fitness. In "Exercise For Better Health And Sports Performance" Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. explains how brightening the winter days with some sensible exercise can reverse many degenerative conditions, reduce your injury potential, improve your physical appearance, and enhance your sports participation.

WHAT DOCTOR'S DON'T TELL YOU - SPECIAL REPORT

SO YOU THINK YOU NEED . . . A TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

That 98 per cent success rate for joint replacement surgery refers to the number of patients who are wheeled out of surgery alive, with the new hip intact. It doesn't cover the casualties that occur subsequently, which can range from death to permanent lameness or lifelong illness. Particularly if you are young, you should know about these possible side-effects before you agree to the operation.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Understanding Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine is a natural pharmaceutical science that uses various plants, minerals or animals in very small dose to stimulate the sick person's natural defenses. The medicines are individually chosen for their ability to cause in overdose the similar symptoms the person is experiencing. In "Ten Most Frequently Asked Questions on Homeopathic Medicine" Dana Ullman answers common questions about homeopathy.

Healthy Alternatives
The results of prolonged insomnia can be very discomforting. In "Insomnia" Emily Kane, N.D. offers alternatives to the common sedative drug solution.

Women's Health Detective
One in 10 women in this country have been diagnosed with thyroid problems. In "Your Thyroid May Be Hungry For Some Seaweed" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. explains that one reason may be because women's thyroid glands are twice as large as those in men, creating a greater need for iodine. When women are under stress, their thyroids become even larger and more active, causing them to need even more.

Holistic Healthcare For Children
Although parents often believe that young children do not think about tobacco or alcohol, prevention of these behaviors should probably begin with 2 or 3 year-olds. In "Preschoolers Use of Cigarettes and Alcohol" Randall Neustaedter, O.M.D. cites the disturbing results of a recent study on the impact of parental actions and the media on children, and urges parents to evaluate their own behavior as role models to create healthy habits in their very impressionable children.

Healthy Woman Update
In "Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)" the American Institute for Preventive Medicine addresses this condition experienced by four out of ten menstruating women. AIPM offers a variety of treatment options and guidelines for when to seek medical assistance.

At many points in Dan Millman’s seminal story of personal transformation, the old warrior Socrates shrugs off Dan's questions with a laconic "It's the House Rules." In "Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior: A Companion to the Book That Changes Lives" Dan Millman takes more than 100 of the book's most interesting and enigmatic passages and explores in detail the key ideas behind them, showing their genesis in spiritual philosophies old and new. HEALTHY KITCHEN

Raw Food Materia Medica
Rhubarb is a member of the Buckwheat Family. It is rich in vitamin C, calcium and potassium. Rhubarb increases saliva production, and gastric juices, including bile. It improves peristalsis, being somewhat laxative. Rhubarb is recommended for bronchitis, constipation, neuritis obesity, and tumors. Due to the high oxalic acid content, which can inhibit calcium and iron absorption, rhubarb is best avoided by those suffering from arthritis, gout, kidney stones, and rheumatism.
