Antibiotics: Doctors Continue To Prescribe Them, Even When They Shouldn't
We all know that antibiotics fight bacterial infections, while it's usually
a virus that sets off influenza. Yet, doctors prescribe antibiotics for 90
per cent of all flu patients.
Trans Fatty Acids: McDonald's Introduces New and Healthier Cooking Oils - Again
McDonald's has announced that it is cutting trans fatty acids from its
fast-food chain. It made a similar claim in 2002, and said the change to an
oil with less trans fats would be completed the following year.
Unfortunately, this did not happen. The new blend will made up of canola,
soybean and corn oils, but it's not clear how the oils will be prepared.
Perhaps McDonald’s is introducing a new process, known as
interesterification, a non-hydrogenated method that nonetheless has
nutritionists worried. In a small study published in Nutrition & Metabolism
journal, people’s 'good' cholesterol levels fell after eating an
interesterified fat diet.
Are Food Labels Too Complicated?
Lawmakers like to force producers of foods and food supplements to put all
kinds of information and warnings on their products, thinking that they are
helping to "inform the consumer". But this may not be so at all.
Researchers have found that only half of all the consumers even look at the
nutrition labels. Much of the information that is being put on labels is
simply not read - it becomes more of a distraction than a useful help for
making food decisions.

WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on MOVING, the 5th of 12 keys to wellness in
the Wellness Inventory. Everything in us is moving. The heart pumps, blood
flows, lungs expand and contract, eyes roll, eardrums vibrate. To be alive
is to be moving. Inhibit the movement and you create illness. Stop movement
and you are dead. Allow it fully and you realize wellness. Because of this
movement, everything is changing from moment to moment. To block movement
therefore is to block change. The moving body freely channels the energy of
life.
Simply Well
Although there is a mass of conflicting data surrounding the components of
sound nutrition practices, in "Learn Ten Basics about Food" John W. Travis,
M.D., M.P.H., provides you with certain recommendations that are almost
universally accepted. He challenges you to pick one to implement into your
daily diet over the next few weeks.
Healthy
Computing
After working at the computer, do your eyes feel tired and irritated?
Approximately 33 to 37 percent of people experience eye irritation such as,
itching, burning, dry eyes or difficulty focusing on the distant objects
after computer work. In "Clear Vision" Erik Peper, Ph.D. offers tips to
prevent this irritation.

NATURAL
ALTERNATIVES
Nutritional Medicine and Longevity
Are megavitamins dangerous? The truth of the matter is that vitamins are in
a class by themselves when it comes to safety. They are safe, even at large
doses, so long as the warning signs of toxicity are heeded. In " Megadose
B12 Therapy" Richard A. Kunin, M.D. discusses the medical use of B12 and
expresses concern for potential damage when B12 deficiency is not
recognized.
Healthy Alternatives
There is very little point in having a series of chelation treatments if
the person thus improved is not going to take advantage of the improved
circulatory capacity which it provides. This should be seen as a second
chance, an opportunity to keep things right and to prevent the inevitable
deterioration which would take place if the same old habits of eating,
life-style and exercise were followed. In "Diet And Exercise During (And
After) Chelation Therapy" Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., M.R.O. provides
elements which need to be seriously considered as you revise your lifestyle
choices.
Women's Health Detective
There's a nutrient your body can produce with a little outside help that
can protect you from cancer, diabetes, depression, and osteoporosis. It's
Vitamin D – the sunshine vitamin. If you spend enough time outdoors, the
sunlight will help your body make vitamin D. This, in turn, can reduce your
risk for a host of health problems. In "Don't Overuse Your Sunscreen;
Sunlight Prevents Cancer" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. explains how sunlight is
your ally, not your enemy, if you follow a few simple guidelines.
Holistic Healthcare For Children
A sharp division has occurred and, in some cases, battle lines have been
drawn over the issue of vaccination. Many pediatricians report that they
would dismiss a family for refusing vaccinations. In "Another Vaccine
Controversy: Pediatricians Who Refuse Care to Children" Randall
Neustaedter, O.M.D. discusses this difficult situation.

"YOGA FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART" - INTERVIEW WITH SUSAN WINTER WARD
Susan Winter Ward, author of "Yoga for the Young at Heart", is a pioneer in
bringing yoga to seniors. Realizing that much of the yoga offered is geared
to the young, hard-bodied, athletic types she decided to offer a more
accessible for of yoga to aging baby boomers and seniors. "So much of the
yoga we see presented is intimidating and demoralizing for people who are
just beginning a yoga practice," says Ward. "I think that does a disservice
to the gift of yoga, as well as to people who would benefit from it..... No
one should be afraid to try yoga. My approach is based on the concept that
the body should be gently treated and honored. Yoga is not competitive, and
it shouldn't hurt." Ward discusses the many health benefits of yoga,
including supporting women who are going through the menopause.

Healthy Bookstore - The Arthritis Action Program
Often considered an "old folks" affliction, arthritis is the medical term
for more than 100 diseases and conditions that affect the joints of about
one out of six Americans--old and young. Treatment for this debilitating,
chronic condition is complicated. In "The Arthritis Action Program: An
Integrated Plan of Traditional and Complementary Therapies" Harvard Medical
School professor of medicine, Michael E. Weinblatt, M.D., developed a
comprehensive guide to explain arthritis "in plain English" and offer
preventative and prescriptive suggestions for successful pain management.
His goal: to foster equal optimism and skepticism, thus empowering the
patient to make informed decisions. Weinblatt includes a helpful refresher
course on bone health and outlines steps to find a health-care provider.

Attitude cannot cure a chronic illness. But cultivating a positive outlook
and learning self-management skills can make it much easier to live with.
In "Rx: How to Live Well with Chronic Disease" David S. Sobel, M.D.
recommends you learn the skills for managing; (1) Your illness and
symptoms, (2) Your normal daily activities, and (3) Your emotions.
Spiritual Wellness
Prayer seems to have a positive effect on various measures of wellness. In
"The Power Of Prayer" Philip Goldberg points out a number of forms other
than the familiar one of asking a higher power for favors. Each type is
rooted in certain mental and emotional conditions. Each should be a sacred
and personal practice, not just a routine obligation.
