Ease Nausea with Ginger
Most pregnant women will experience bouts of nausea and vomiting - particularly in the first trimester. Multiple studies have concluded that ginger is more effective than a placebo in relieving vomiting and nausea associated with pregnancy.

Antibacterial Soap Ingredient Triclosan may be Harmful to Humans
Triclosan, widely used as an antibacterial ingredient in household hand sterilization products, breaks down rapidly when exposed to chlorinated water and produces toxic chemicals including chloroform. This suggests that many antibacterial products may not only be ineffective, but harmful.

Arsenic in My Fluoride? CDC Admits
Trace amounts of arsenic are found in fluoride chemicals added to drinking water supplies, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) website. Fluoridation chemicals - sodium fluoride, sodium fluorosilicate, and fluorosilicic acid (FSA) – are all derived from the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer, reports the CDC.  Trace amounts of unwanted contaminants, such as antimony, barium, beryllium, arsenic and others, are allowed to remain in fluoridation chemicals before flowing through America’s faucets.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on the power of PLAYING & WORKING, the 8th of 12 keys to wellness drawn from the Wellness Inventory whole person assessment program. Most of our daily life falls under one of these two categories. For us adults, the majority of time is usually spent focused on work with far too little time allowed for play. What passes for play for most adults is more likely to be escape activities-- distraction from the responsibilities of work. Many people turn to the entertainment industry instead of engaging in the joyful, creative, spontaneous play that is vital to our wellbeing.

Simply Well
While an attitude of openness to life is definitely health-promoting, saying yes to life means saying no a good deal of the time, too. People who are afraid of disapproval from others will say yes regardless of their true feelings to avoid rocking the boat. In "Just Say No" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., explains the health promoting benefits for appropriately saying no.

Staying Healthly Tips
Spring, the season of re-birth, is fast approaching. In "10 Tips for Staying Healthy in Spring" Elson M. Haas, M.D. offers you practical and refreshing things you can do to be sure you are healthy and able to truly enjoy this special time of the year.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

From Fatigued to Fantastic
In "Q and A on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia with Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D. - #14" Dr. Teitelbaum discusses the nutritional deficiency issues of CFS and presents treatment options.

Healthy Alternatives
Keeping your immune system strong is very important if you want to stay healthy. Your body is constantly eliminating toxins, but sometimes it gets overwhelmed. When it gets out of balance, you can support the natural self-correcting response. In "Boosting Your Immune Response - Helpful Suggestions" David L. Hoffmann, B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. and Jacquelyn J. Wilson, M.D. suggest that you make sure that your body's natural exits for toxins are kept open, pay attention to your diet, and take appropriate homeopathic remedies.

Dr. Christine Horner's Natural Secrets for Breast Health
Research shows drinking tea, especially green tea, is a wise choice because green tea has been found to have many potent health benefits. In "Breast Health Tip #2: Green Tea" Christine Horner, M.D., F.A.C.S reports that Japanese researchers found that women who drink green tea have a lower risk of breast cancer, and women with breast cancer, live much longer than women who don't drink this miraculous health tonic.

Healthy Child
Coughing can be a sign of many diseases. Your child's body uses coughing to clear the lungs and airways. In "Childhood Cough" the American Institute for Preventive Medicine notes that coughing itself is not the problem. What causes the cough is the problem. How to treat a cough depends on what kind it is, what caused it, and the other symptoms.

Healthy Bookstore - Genetic Roulette

The biotech industry's claim that genetically modified (GM) foods are safe is shattered in this ground-breaking book, "Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods" by Jeffrey M. Smith. Nearly 65 health risks of the foods that Americans eat every day are presented in easy-to-read two-page spreads. The left page is designed for the quick scanning reader; it includes bullets, illustrations, and quotes. The right side offers fully referenced text, describing both research studies and theoretical risks. The second half of Genetic Roulette shows how safety assessments on GM crops are not competent to identify the health problems presented in the first half.

Nutrition Tips
In the field of nutrition there is a great deal of controversy about food combining. Ayurveda, an ancient science of healing, offers a logical and scientific approach for determining correct diet based upon an individual's constitution. In "Incompatible Food Combinations (Virudha-ahar)" Dr. Vasant Lad offers explanations of this unique approach. He integrates information on types of nutritional disorders, basic concepts of an Ayurvedic food combining program, digestive aids, and incompatible food combinations.

MIND-BODY-SPIRIT

Mind Over Matter
"Healing" means "to make sound or whole, or to restore to health." It also refers to causing an undesirable condition to be overcome. In the context of mind-body medicine, what affects the mind clearly and indistinguishably affects the body and visa versa. In "Healing: An Individual Perspective" Barry Bittman, M.D. points out our tendency to ignore what is really bothering us. He urges us to better deal with the issues that stress us. Take time to stop and contemplate the way we really feel. Get in touch with our feelings. Ask ourselves whether it's the issue or our perspective that's causing us pain.

Wholistic Spiritual Healing
It is estimated that only 5% of our brain capacity is within conscious awareness. This means that we have another 95% of brain/consciousness capacity we can tap. In "The Body (Part 6): Physical, bodymind, energetic, and potential doorway to spiritual awareness" Daniel J. Benor, M.D. explains how Applied Kinesiology (AK) provides methods for using the body to facilitate access to the unconscious mind. When you are emotionally upset, as in depression, anxiety or anger, your body becomes weaker. If you think about something that is distressing, your muscles will reflect this.
