Federal Law Needed To Require Drug Companies To Disclose Payments To Doctors, Public Citizen Tells Congress
In contrast to other professions such as education and law, which do not allow payments from those who could benefit from the use of particular products, the health care profession allows payments from the drug industry to doctors that involve cash, cash-value payments or in-kind payments, including meals and conference fees. A Senate Special Committee on Aging held a recent hearing entitled "Paid to Prescribe? Exploring the Relationship Between Doctors and the Drug Industry." Testimony by a representative of Public Citizen stated that a strong national disclosure law is needed.

Treating ADHD & ADD with Acupuncture
Parents are beginning to question the side-effects of the drugs prescribed for their children with ADHD. Acupuncture is increasing in popularity as an alternative therapy for these children. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete system that evaluates each patient individually and addresses specifically to their personality, problems, and bodies. Parents interested in pursuing natural therapies for children suffering from ADHD should consult a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine or a registered acupuncturist.

FDA Blocks Chinese Seafood Imports After Finding Widespread Contamination
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a broader import control of all farm-raised catfish, basa, shrimp, dace (related to carp), and eel from China. This strong step was made by the FDA because of current and continuing evidence that certain Chinese aquaculture products imported into the United States contain illegal substances that are not permitted in seafood sold in the United States.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

Medical Disasters and How To Avoid Them (Part 1)
The new documentary by Michael Moore called SICKO has launched nationwide heralding the cry of health care reform due to the inadequacies of the health care system. Dr. Pierce Scranton, an Orthopeadic Surgeon, arms us with practical tips on how to take charge of our own experiences while at a hospital and he teaches us how to protect ourselves and prevent any travesty that could occur. In the next six weeks, HealthWorld Online and Dr. Pierce Scranton, will provide actual case by case, behind the scenes scenarios, along with tips on how NOT to have these experiences happen to you. This week, you will hear the story of the mishandling of a woman's knee surgery and the questions she could have asked to have had a more positive outcome.

Healing Power of the Mind- A Series by Martin Rossman, MD
You have been blessed with a mind that can evoke, understand, interact and cooperate with your natural ability to heal. In "Healing Wisdom" Martin L. Rossman, M.D. explains how you can cultivate your ability to care for and learn from the healing nature that lies within you, and you can re-own your respect for the healing marvel that you truly are.

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on the power of COMMUNICATING, the 9th of 12 keys to wellness drawn from the Wellness Inventory whole person assessment program. This section focuses almost exclusively on verbal communication, exploring the dynamics of how people talk to themselves and one another. It also looks at the breakdowns in communication that can occur. As you come to understand and appreciate this process, you may simultaneously understand and appreciate yourself. The clearer the channel (you), the better the possibilities for a meaningful encounter--a dynamic energy exchange.

Simply Well
Wellness starts with the recognition that your body is wise, your mind is wise, and your soul is wise. In "Discover What You Already Know" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., reminds you that you may not always honor that wisdom in yourself, but it is there nonetheless. He offers you some honest self-exploration exercises that will gradually reveal more of your own inner wisdom.

WHAT DOCTOR'S DON'T TELL YOU - SPECIAL REPORT

IN DEFENSE OF 'DISPROVED' HOMEOPATHY

Periodically, the medical profession condemns homeopathy as unproven. Read how the "proof" is based on erroneous information and analysis.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Understanding Homeopathy
Involuntary urination is ironically a problem experienced at both ends of a person's life, both during infancy and aging. Older adults have difficulty with bladder control usually because of either urinary tract disease, nervous system dysfunction, allergic response, ruptured disk, or psychological stress. Women tend to experience involuntary urination after childbirth, surgery, or inflammation of the urethra, while men tend to get it if they have a prostate problem. In "Homeopathic Medicines For Involuntary Urination" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. explains the common causes of this condition, and outlines homeopathic remedies that may resolve the problem, rather than just eliminate the symptom.

Healthy Alternatives
Studies show that 20% of school age children have a problem which interferes with learning. In "Smart In Everything But School" Robert B. Sanet, O.D., F.C.O.V.D. and Carl G. Hillier, O.D., F.C.O.V.D. explain that many children mislabeled as lazy, dyslexic, or attention deficit disorder may actually be suffering from an undiagnosed learning-related vision problem...even though they have 20/20 sight.

Dr. Christine Horner's Natural Secrets for Breast Health
In this age of widespread pollution, toxins, and stressful lifestyles that fuel the production of oxygen free radicals, most of us need more antioxidant protection than what we can get from our food. This fact becomes significant in the context of what Christine Horner, M.D., F.A.C.S reports in "Breast Health Tip #10: Antioxidants." Taking supplemental antioxidants, like selenium, can lower your risk of breast cancer by as much as 50%.

Healthy Child
Luckily, hiccups are generally harmless and don't last very long. In "Hiccups" the American Institute for Preventive Medicine suggests one teaspoon of corn syrup for young children, but to call the doctor if a child's hiccups last more then three hours.

Find an Alternative Healthcare Professional
Looking for a practitioner specializing in bodywork? Search the Bodywork and Somatic Therapies section which includes the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia, Hellerwork International, and The Trager Institute member database in HealthWorld's Find a Practitioner Network. The network contains searchable directories with over 17,000 professionals from 20 leading professional associations in complementary/alternative and integrative medicine.

RECOMMENDED READING

Healthy Bookstore - Sugar Shock!

Most readers already know that succumbing to sweets too often can lead to obesity and diabetes. What many don't know, however, is that too many "quickie carbs" can bring on a host of other maladies-such as "brain fog," fatigue, mood swings, heart disease, and even cancer-from which millions may be suffering because of their sugar or carbohydrate habits. Once besieged by 44 seemingly unconnected symptoms, former "sugar addict" Connie Bennett, an experienced journalist, managed to kick sweets and simple carbs in 1998. She improved her health-and uncovered extensive medical research that substantiated her theory: people who eat too many low-caliber culprit carbs could be in sugar shock. Based on the insights of thousands of physicians, nutritionists, researchers, and "sugar sufferers" worldwide, "Sugar Shock!: How Sweets and Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life -- and How You Can Get Back on Track" by Connie Bennett, C.H.H.C. and Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D. not only addresses how badly sugar affects the body, it demonstrates how everyone can kick the sugar habit.

HEALTHY KITCHEN

Nutrition Tips
In "Red Meats" Elson M. Haas, M.D. acknowledges that the "red meats" are probably the most controversial of the food categories. It is very clear that an excess of meat in the diet can cause all kinds of problems, but many doctors recommend red meats as a good source for protein and iron. Dr. Haas covers beef, pork and lamb, and offers ten principles for using meat in the diet.

Fabulous Functional Foods
Danish chef Oscar Umahro Cadogan offers us a "Sesame-Flaxseed Shake with Banana" that beats a regular milkshake, both in terms of taste and nutritive value. The sesame seeds contain lots of calcium and other minerals and the flaxseed is rich in alpha-linolenic acid, which is anti-inflammatory.

Use the program to enrich your physical and mental states of well-being, while reducing stress and restoring balance to your daily life.

MIND-BODY-SPIRIT

Mind Over Matter
There is a need for our nation's healthcare system to encourage the development of synergistic strategies that fill the voids that serve to undermine healing. In "Whole Person Cancer Care: An Extraordinary Opportunity at a Critical Juncture" Barry Bittman, M.D. discusses normally overlooked aspects of a treatment program, particularly for cancer patients. These include learning to develop a healthy belief system, building and maintaining support networks, discovering one's meaning and purpose in life, and restoring an ongoing sense of hope.

Music and Wellness
The magical, sacred drum has extraordinary power to touch something deep and powerful within all. The sounds awaken our spirits and speak to our most primal and truest selves. In "The Healing Power of the Drum - Part II: Drumming and Parkinson's Disease" Robert Lawrence Friedman relates how patients with trouble initiating movement found the rhythms helped them get started.
