HEALTH NEWS

Acupuncture Can Ease Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting
The most commonly stated fear of patients prior to elective surgery is not death or a surgical mishap. It's post-operative nausea and vomiting. In several recent studies, acupuncture has been proven to lessen these symptoms. Patients using acupuncture also had less post-surgical pain and increased general patient satisfaction post-op.

Prostate Cancer Survival Improves with Low-Fat Vegan Diet, New Study Shows
Men who increase consumption of cancer-fighting vegetarian foods and avoid foods that feed tumor growth, such as dairy products and meat, may significantly increase chances of living longer after prostate cancer diagnosis. High-fat, low-fiber diets raise circulating testosterone, estradiol, and insulin levels, which in turn may fuel prostate cancer cell growth. Among men with the highest intake of saturated fat, the risk of dying from prostate cancer is three times higher than among men with the lowest intake.

Top 20 Things that are More Dangerous to Children Than Lead Paint in Mattel Toys
The mainstream media is amusingly irrational when it comes to reporting scare stories. The latest example involves the lead content of Mattel toys made in China. The press, of course, reports nothing about other toxic products. And why? Because they're made in America. Review the list of the top 20 things that are more dangerous to children than lead paint in Mattel toys.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on SENSING, the third of 12 keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. It is through the senses--seeing, touching, smelling, hearing, tasting--that we come to know and enjoy the world. Our abilities to work, to feel pleasure, to communicate with others, and to impact the world are directly related to our abilities to appreciate and use our sensory input efficiently and creatively.

Simply Well
Recent studies indicate that humor is an effective stress reducer and that it may actually increase antibody production, which means a stronger immune system. In "Lighten Up with Humor, Play, and Pleasure" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., offers you some delightful options for taking a seriousness break and encourages you to schedule time for doing something fun or for just doing nothing.

Healthy Computing
Excessively long nails usually increase hand, arm, neck and shoulder tension because long nails encumber simple movements, resulting in awkward wrist and finger angles. In "Trim And Fit" Erik Peper, Ph.D. explains that for people with long finger nails the joints of the fingers and wrists cannot be placed in neutral positions when typing, mousing, buttoning or doing other fine motor activities. Stop sacrificing your health, save money and become fashionable.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Nutritional Medicine and Longevity
CoQ is required for cell energy. It strengthens the immune system, conferring greater resistance to infection, not due to increased numbers of white blood cells but greater potency of the existing cells. In "Coenzyme Q10: A Miracle Vitamin" Richard A. Kunin, M.D. notes that tissue levels of CoQ decline as much as 80% in old age. This single fact appears to explain some of the increased risk of heart failure, immune dysfunction, delayed healing and general weakening of energy and strength that are stereotypical of growing old. By simply taking supplements of CoQ, this age-related drop in vitality can be reversed to an amazing extent.

Healthy Alternatives
Headaches are a common complaint and a notoriously difficult one to treat effectively. In "Headaches" George T. Lewith, M.A., M.R.C.G.P., M.R.C.P. describes how the majority of headache sufferers obtain significant and long lasting pain relief from acupuncture treatment. Migraines seem to respond as well as, if not better than, other types of headache.

Women's Health Detective
There are known lifestyle choices that can increase or decrease your risk for having a stroke. In "Easy Ways To Prevent Stroke" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. explains how to evaluate your risk for a stroke and offers an anti-stroke diet high in nutrients so you can keep your blood vessels from becoming fragile.

Healthy Woman Update
In "What Every Woman Needs To Know About Her Flow!" Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman, N.D., M.S.W., DHANP points out that there is a wide range of normal in the menstrual flow. Each woman has her own range of normalcy. A slight amount of cramping or discomfort falls within the range of normal for a woman. She shares the homeopathic remedies she recommends for more severe symptoms.

Raw Food Materia Medica
All beans are members of the Pea Family and relatives of peanuts. String beans are considered a spleen, kidney and yin tonic. They have traditionally been used to improve acne, diabetes, diarrhea, night sweats, thirst, and frequent urination. MIND-BODY-SPIRIT

Mind/Body Health
Patients undergoing surgery often experience a loss of control, feeling more like victims than participants. Anxiety, fear of the unknown, fear of pain, dependency, uncertainty, and helplessness are common emotions which can intensify the perception of pain associated with invasive medical procedures. Physical and psychological stress can also contribute to prolonged postoperative recovery and a suppressed immune system, reports Dr. David Sobel in "Guided Imagery Speeds Surgical Recovery." Guided imagery may also help patients strengthen their immune system and enhance their own healing according to recent studies.

Wholistic Spiritual Healing
It is possible to know information without inputs through our five ordinary senses of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. We call these psychic impressions. They provide another level for intuitive awareness. Researchers have dissected psychic abilities into theoretical components. In "Intuition (Part 3 of 5 parts)" Daniel J. Benor, M.D. details telepathy, clairsentience, precognition, retrocognition, and ESP.
