HEALTH
NEWS
FDA Continues Pushing Natural Herb Sweetener Stevia Out of U.S.
Stevia is a main staple sweetener in many countries, including Japan and
China, where it's found in multiple food products. Many major U.S.
companies have been developing products that substitute stevia for
artificial sweeteners like aspartame, but the FDA currently bans any food
product from containing the natural sweetener. The FDA claims that data and
information necessary to support the safe use of stevia has been lacking.
But on the FDA's own website, a GRAS petition submitted to the FDA in 1995
cited over 900 Stevia studies, none of which indicated any safety concerns
regarding human health.
OSU Linus Pauling Institute Expert: Vitamin E Trials "Fatally Flawed"
Generations of studies on vitamin E may be largely meaningless, scientists
say, because new research has demonstrated that the levels of this
micronutrient necessary to reduce oxidative stress are far higher than
those that have been commonly used in clinical trials. In a new study and
commentary researchers concluded that the levels of vitamin E necessary to
reduce oxidative stress are about 1,600 to 3,200 I.U. daily, or four to
eight times higher than those used in almost all past clinical trials.
CPR: New Technique Could Save Many More Lives
A new method of CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), which concentrates on
the belly area instead of the chest, is supposed to be more effective.
Instead of two breaths for every 30 chest compressions, the new procedure
provides a breath for every abdominal compression because pushing on the
abdomen depresses the diaphragm toward the head, expelling air from the
lungs. The new technique produces 25 per cent more blood flow through the
heart muscle, and reduces the chances of damage to the rub cage.

WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on MOVING, the 5th of 12 keys to wellness in
the Wellness Inventory. Everything in us is moving. The heart pumps, blood
flows, lungs expand and contract, eyes roll, eardrums vibrate. To be alive
is to be moving. Inhibit the movement and you create illness. Stop movement
and you are dead. Allow it fully and you realize wellness. Because of this
movement, everything is changing from moment to moment. To block movement
therefore is to block change. The moving body freely channels the energy of
life.
Simply Well
With the experts disagreeing among themselves, it's no wonder that
nutrition has become almost as controversial as religion or politics. In
"Develop Personal Nutritional Awareness" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H.,
guides you to develop awareness of your body and its nutritional needs. You
learn to observe what types and quantities of food and what eating
environments support your overall wellbeing, and which don't.
Keeping Fit
After the more relaxed pace of summertime living we are now into the faster
and busier daily schedule of school, work, and a variety of extracurricular
activities. For many of us, the more hectic lifestyle is associated with
greater psychological stress and the potential for higher blood pressure
readings. It is a good idea to have your blood pressure checked at some
point during the fall season, according to Dr. Wayne Westcott in "Facts
About Blood Pressure."

NATURAL
ALTERNATIVES
Understanding Homeopathy
In "First Aid with Homeopathic Medicines" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. shows how
homeopathic remedies for first aid and sports injuries are very easy to
prescribe and are usually very effective in reducing pain of the injury and
speeding the healing process. It is thus no wonder that many superstar
athletes have heard about homeopathy and have begun to benefit from its
use. Former tennis great Boris Becker, New York Knick coach Pat Riley,
ex-Yankee pitcher Jim Bouton, and pro golfer Sally Little are but some of
the athletes who spell relief with H-O-M-E-O-P-A-T-H-Y.
Healthy Alternatives
Keeping your immune system strong is very important if you
want to stay healthy. Your body is constantly eliminating toxins, but
sometimes it gets overwhelmed. When it gets out of balance, you can support
the natural self-correcting response. In "Boosting Your Immune Response -
Helpful Suggestions" David L. Hoffmann, B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. and
Jacquelyn J. Wilson, M.D. suggest that you make sure that your body's
natural exits for toxins are kept open, pay attention to your diet, and
take appropriate homeopathic remedies.
Women's Health Detective
If you have trouble getting a good night's sleep, you're not alone. In
"Melatonin and Eight Other Tips for a Good Night's Sleep" Nan Kathryn
Fuchs, Ph.D. offers great ways that will safely help you get a good night's
sleep. These include changes in diet, environment, and mineral supplements.
Healthy Woman Update
Toxic shock syndrome is a potentially fatal disease that is caused by
bacteria. Often it affects women of childbearing age, especially women who
use super absorbent tampons. In "Toxic Shock Syndrome" the American
Institute for Preventive Medicine identifies prevention tips, plus offers
self-care and prevention procedures.

INDIVIDUALIZED HEALTH SOLUTIONS - ADVERTISEMENT
VITAMINS BASED ON YOUR BODY'S NEEDS, NOT RDA's
There is no more need for confusion about the vitamins and minerals your
body personally needs. One-size-fits-all vitamin formulas are last
century's technology. Individualized formulas based on your unique
biochemical needs are now possible and affordable.
With over 30,000 genes each person is Bio-Chemically unique. After 20 years
of clinical research, on over 20,000 clients, analyzing over 100 vital
blood, tissue and urine tests a group of scientists can now determine each
individual's basic nutrient needs.
"There is no more guess work involved - now you can take control of your
health with the Signature Supplement individualized nutritional program."

The Healer Within
In the Chinese tradition where energy pathways and points are accepted
aspects of the body, attention is drawn to specific energy areas as the
rhythm of the breath continues. In "Progressive Relaxation, Option II" Dr.
Roger Jahnke presents a procedure that includes 16 stations or points of
awareness and is very simple and brief. It can be done with many more
awareness points and may include focusing on each finger and toe, segments
of the arms and legs, joints, individual organs, etc.
Music and Wellness
It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to realize music's impact on
our lives. There's no doubt it has the power to orchestrate our emotional
tone. Music can trigger just about any emotion - it can bring joy to our
hearts or sadness in anticipation of pain, loss, or separation. In "Music
and Medicine: The Universal Language of Mind, Body and Soul" Barry Bittman,
M.D. also reminds us that all forms of music are not understood,
appreciated or enjoyed by everyone. Culture and preference must be
considered in every form of music therapy. Enjoyment rather than
performance should be emphasized at all ages. For a certain type of music
to be healing, it has to resonate with one's soul - it must be comprehended
deep within.
