Sinus Problems Are Treated Well With Safe, Inexpensive Treatment, UMHS Study Finds
Nasal irrigations with saline are more effective than saline spray for
short-term relief of chronic nasal symptoms, researchers find. Participants
in the study who were treated with irrigation experienced a much greater
benefit than those who were treated with saline spray, in terms of both the
severity and frequency of their symptoms.
Failing Eyesight: Lutein Is the Best Defense
Lutein - the antioxidant found in dark green leafy vegetables such as
spinach and kale - has been proven to reduce our risk of developing the eye
disease age-related macular degeneration. A new study has confirmed that
lutein is the most effective antioxidant after studying the progress of a
group of 4,519 participants aged between 60 and 80. Most of the group's
lutein intake was from food rather than from supplements.
Codex Alimentarius Moves Closer to European Blueprint on Supplements
Recently, the Committee for Nutrition and Dietary Foods of Codex
Alimentarius, an international food standard setting body, met in Germany,
discussing matters ranging from nutrients to baby foods, from sustainable
health care to the promotion of healthy foods. The chairman of the meeting
is also the head of the ultra-conservative group opposed to supplements and
he guides the committee in the direction of more control, tighter limits,
and less freedom for consumers to choose. This Germans model is being set
up to be exported to the US next. The FDA seems content - they have always
wanted a good reason to clamp down on those nasty supplements. Vitamins
have become a mainstream health enhancer and a real thorn in the eye of the
pharmaceutical industry, which the FDA is set up to protect.

WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
Simply Well
The noise pollution of modern society grows more strident every year. Rest
and quiet are necessary when you are healing from illness, as well as when
you simply want to renew yourself. In "Cultivate Sanity through Silence"
John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., offers you helpful hints for how you can
nourish yourself in a quieter home by eliminating some unnecessary noise.
Keeping Fit
It is reported that the average American experiences a 7-pound weight gain
between Thanksgiving and New Year's, then spends the next several weeks
trying to lose as much of the excess as possible. Unfortunately, many
people are unsuccessful in their weight reduction efforts, and wish that
they had not added the holiday weight in the first place, says Dr. Wayne
Westcott in "Survival Strategies For The Holiday Season." Most would agree
that it is better to prevent unwanted weight gain than to remedy the
situation later. But just how can we approach the festivities and abundant
food supplies so prevalent throughout November and December to avoid
overeating? I have a few suggestions in that regard, and I also recommend
an exercise emphasis during this critical time of year.
Healthy Sexuality
Are you aware that there is a direct relationship between your intimate
relationships and your health? In "Sex, Love, and Healing" Judyth
Reichenberg-Ullman, N.D., M.S.W., DHANP states that often the disease
symptoms you may be experiencing are the red flags that your body-mind is
using to let you know that some aspect of your relationship isn't working.

NATURAL
ALTERNATIVES
Reiki - A Special Series by Pamela Miles
We are pleased to introduce our readers to the dynamic work of Pamela
Miles, a longtime Reiki master and pioneer in integrating Reiki into
healthcare settings. In this issue we have the first installment of a
six-part series on Reiki, "What is Reiki and How Can It Help Me?". We will
follow in the next five issues with articles on the history of Reiki,
Finding and Choosing a Reiki Master or Practitioner, Reiki Treatment, Reiki
Training, and Reiki in medicine. Pamela is author of Reiki: A
Comprehensive Guide (Tarcher-Penguin). She is founding president of the
Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies (I*ACT), has 35
years experience as a clinician, educator and lecturer in natural healing,
and has consulted with hospitals and medical schools.
What Doctor's Don't Tell You - Special Report
In "The Great Prozac Conspiracy" the What Doctors Don't Tell You staff
reports that after 20 years of these so-called miracle antidepressants,
psychiatrists are shocked to discover that drug companies withheld
information about the risks of this class of drugs--and with the tacit
approval of the drug regulators. It now turns out that these
super-sophisticated drugs that were once hoped to be relatively free of
side-effects are, in fact, potentially more dangerous than the crude
tricyclic antidepressants of the 1950s they were meant to surpass.
Understanding Homeopathy
It is sometimes difficult to stomach gas, heartburn, and indigestion pains.
The fact of the matter is that your digestive symptoms are defenses of your
body. In "Homeopathic Medicines For Indigestion, Gas, And Heartburn:
Natural Remedies You Can Stomach" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. outlines common
symptoms, what they indicate, and which specific homeopathic remedies are
appropriate to consider.
Healthy Alternatives
Biofeedback is generally defined as the presentation to a person of ongoing
biological information, such as heart rate, usually by means of meters,
lights, or auditory signals, so that he or she can become aware of
inside-the-skin behaviors. Biofeedback training means using the information
in learning how to self-regulate the biological process being displayed. In
"Biofeedback" Elmer Green, Ph.D. presents qualifications of these
definitions.
Dr. Christine Horner's Natural Secrets for Breast Health
Research has shown beyond a scientific doubt that eating red meat is a
serious risk factor for breast cancer. In "Breast Health Tip #20: Avoid Red
Meat" Christine Horner, M.D., F.A.C.S explains how the dangers comes from
structural changes when meat is cooked at high temperatures. To replace
meat in your diet she offers delicious vegetable-based meat-substitute
cuisine options.
Healthy Child
Studies show that 20% of school age children have a problem which
interferes with learning. In "Smart In Everything But School?" Robert B.
Sanet, O.D., F.C.O.V.D, and Carl G. Hillier, O.D., F.C.O.V.D. talk about a
comprehensive vision analysis which includes an in-depth evaluation of
visual tracking, focusing, eye coordination, and the underlying
visual-perceptual and visual-integrative abilities necessary for efficient
learning. They introduce Optometric Vision Therapy, a treatment program
designed to eliminate visual problems, reduce visual stress and discomfort,
and increase visual performance.
