Lawsuit Against Splenda Moves Forward
A federal court has rejected a request for summary judgment in a lawsuit regarding claims of false advertising for the artificial sweetener Splenda. This means that the case will go ahead as planned. The plaintiff in the case is the Sugar Association, which has long claimed that Splenda's marketing slogan - "Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar" -- is being used to make consumers believe that the artificial sweetener contains natural sugar.

Doctors are Clueless About Medication for Kids
Information on how to prescribe medications to children is scarce, and doctors often rely on the flawed assumption that children are simply smaller versions of adults when doing so. In reality, drugs act much differently in children, yet few studies have been conducted to determine their effectiveness, safety and proper dosages. Federal regulators have enticed or forced pharmaceutical companies to conduct studies on more than 200 drugs geared for children, but more than two-thirds of the medications given to children remain untested.

Judge Rules U.S. Drug Companies Defrauded Medicare with Price Fixing Scheme
A federal judge has ruled that three pharmaceutical companies artificially marked up their prices in order to defraud Medicare and encourage doctors to prescribe their drugs over those of competitors. The judge agreed with the plaintiffs' complaint that the drug companies deliberately inflated their average wholesale prices in 2003, when those prices were still used to determine Medicare reimbursements. This created a gap between the prices Medicare was paying and the (lower) prices charged to doctors and pharmacies. This meant that doctors would actually be reimbursed more than they had paid for the drugs, creating a profit incentive for doctors to prescribe certain products.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on EATING, the 4th of 12 keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. Most Americans' eating patterns represent a public health crisis. If a new disease erupted that was one tenth as destructive as most people's diets, there would be a massive public outcry to find the cure. The way many people eat is the result of a lifestyle that glorifies immediate satisfaction and neglects the long-term consequences.

Simply Well
In "Don't Play It Safe" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., challenges you to express more of your tremendous potential. He explains how health is a function of your participation in life.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Sixth Column for Reiki - A Special Series by Pamela Miles
Reiki treatment does not attack disease. Rather, it supports the person experiencing the disease by gently encouraging his or her system toward its unique state of balance. In "Reiki and Medicine" Pamela Miles presents information about research and study results supporting what Reiki can do.

Nutritional Medicine and Longevity
In "Coenzyme Q10: A Miracle Vitamin" Richard Kunin, M.D. presents a nutrient that should be a household word. CoQ is required for cell energy and promotes faster healing of wounds, strengthens the immune system, and is an impressive treatment of heart conditions. Tissue levels of CoQ decline as much as 80% in old age and this single fact appears to explain some of the increased risk of heart failure, immune dysfunction, delayed healing and general weakening of energy and strength that are stereotypical of growing old. By simply taking supplements of CoQ, this age-related drop in vitality can be reversed to an amazing extent.

Healthy Alternatives
In "The Medical Botany of John Bartram" Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac., A.H.G. traces the history of herbal medicine in the U.S., starting with the volume of data that came over on the Mayflower in 1620.

Women's Health Detective
Exposure to light at night not only affects your ability to sleep during the day, it also increases your risk for cancer. In "Beyond Insomnia: Your Favorite Sleep Hormone Is Now Used In Cancer Therapy" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. discusses an interesting phenomena revealed by a study that showed less toxicity and a better response from drug therapy in patients with colon cancer who were given their medication at night. Combine traditional treatments with melatonin, and the benefits increased dramatically.

Holistic Healthcare For Children
Allergies affect about 38%of all Americans, and about 5% of the US population has asthma. The highest proportion of asthma is among children age 5 to 14, a total of 5 million children. In "Allergies and Asthma in Children" Randall Neustaedter, O.M.D. presents the case that allergies can be significantly improved, and even cured, with holistic treatment options, such as homeopathy, nutrition, and Chinese herbs. Plus, the important connection between emotions and the immune system should not be neglected.

Healthy Woman Update
In "A Case of Cystitis, Vaginitis and Edema of the Eyelids" Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman, N.D., M.S.W., DHANP presents a case study that demonstrates why the homeopathic remedy Apis, made from an angry honeybee, helps with hot, red, and swollen symptoms.

Healthy Bookstore - A Year to Live

In "A Year to Live: How to Live This Year As If It Were Your Last" Stephen Levine teaches us how to live each moment, each hour, each day mindfully--as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. Most of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore, laugh off, or deny the fact that we are going to die, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life.

HEALTHY KITCHEN

Nutrition Tips
Fish is a very good quality protein, easily usable by our body, and a complete protein containing all our essential amino acids. In "Seafood" Elson M. Haas, M.D. outlines the vast array of benefits of eating various varieties of fish - lower blood cholesterol, protect us from hardening of the arteries, and help to reduce platelet stickiness.

There's a Yogi in the Kitchen!
You have heard the expression, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." In "Something Worth Crying Over!" Siri-Ved Kaur Khalsa offers a new one to remember: "An onion a day keeps disease away!" Onions' job is to keep the blood pure, improve digestion, and promote liver detoxification. She includes several "yogic remedies" that employ onion.

MIND-BODY-SPIRIT

Mind Over Matter
The start of a new year is a good time to welcome new opportunities for personal growth. It's also a time to establish personal commitments to better ourselves. In "Resolutions for the New Year: Goal Setting 101" Barry Bittman, M.D. recommends we develop a plan for achieving what has the potential to make a significant difference in our life - a choice and a commitment that yields greater happiness, security, or peace of mind.

Music and Wellness
Entrainment is the law of synchronization that causes two separate rhythms to naturally line up when placed near one another. Is this an explanation as to why cultures throughout history have included drumming in their rituals, celebrations, and ceremonies? In "The ART of Drum Circles" learn how drum circles seem to tap into the primal need to share and support one another through one of the simplest and most beautiful ways to connect without words; music. This is one of a series of articles by Christine Stevens, author, music therapist and Director of Music Therapy and Wellness Programs at Remo, Inc. http://www.remo.com.
