Sleeping well every day keeps the doctor away?
Mothers for millennia have exhorted children to get enough sleep to avoid becoming sick. But is there evidence to support mother's claim? And if we do happen to get sick, are the changes in our sleep beneficial? Links between sleep and the immune system are the topic of a study published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience. The article focuses on the means by which the immune system tells the brain that there is an infection and that we should sleep differently

Continuing our Wellness Journey - Eating
This week our journey focuses on EATING, the 4th of 12 keys to wellness in
the Wellness Inventory. Most Americans' eating patterns represent a public health crisis. If a new disease erupted that was one tenth as destructive as most people's diets, there would be a massive public outcry to find thecure. The way many people eat is the result of a lifestyle that glorifies immediate satisfaction and neglects the long-term consequences. View more

From Fatigued to Fantastic - "Iodine Deficiency — An Old Epidemic is Back" - Jacob Teitelbaum, MD
The issue of iodine deficiency will be growing in importance over the coming decade. This is occurring for a number of reasons. The current RDA for iodine is ~ 150 mcg/day. Much of this comes from iodine added to salt. Unfortunately, most of the salt used in food processing does not have iodine, and people are using less salt at home (the stuff that is iodized) because of the misguided medical advice (except in those with heart failure) to avoid salt. People who eat more salt live longer. View more

Integrator Blog - Nancy Gahles: Homeopathic Leader Reports on the 1300 Participant Integrative Healthcare Symposium, February 19-21, NYC
For many of us, this weeks' "integrative health policy week" in Washington, DC actually began with the robust Integrative Healthcare Symposium (IHS) in New York City last week where a multidisciplinary gathering of 1300 met to explore policy, practice, science and business issues. Nancy Gahles, DC, CCH, RSHom (NA), an advisory board member for IHS, offers her review of pros and cons of the meeting. She explores roadmaps-for-the-future policy panels which included Wayne Jonas, Josephine Briggs, Mary Jo Kreitzer, Bill Benda and others. Some of what she experiences she celebrates. At the same time, Gahles, president of the National Center for Homeopathy, challenges the MD-centrism of much of the content and wonders whether these roads will take us "back to Rome?" It's a thought provoking, homeopathic-centric review. If you attended, what did you think about the inter-disciplinary balance at the IHS?

Ask Dr. Orloff about Intuitive Healing - "Step One of Intuitive Healing:
Notice Your Beliefs" We all have a choice about our health, says Judith Orloff, M.D. She reminds us that our mind and body are linked by an intricate intuitive circuitry. Notice the pattern of any recurring beliefs or emotions that occur before an illness. They may well be premonitions. We need to be aware of our thinking, notice when fear takes over, and begin to reprogram our thoughts.

Mind Over Matter - "Smoking Prevention: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - Barry Bittman, MD
A study evaluating smoking prevention programs involved a comprehensive effort including motivational and self-help cessation materials, faculty training on how to encourage and support teen smoking cessation efforts, as well as posters and school newspaper advertisements with anti-smoking elements. Unfortunately, dedicated efforts to offer smoking cessation programs for our youth are a
failure. Barry Bittman, M.D. challenges that teacher and peer influence in schools cannot be expected to effectively counteract family and societal influences in the long run.
