Omega-3 supplements cut heart failure risk
Eat a fatty fish dish – such as salmon – once a week, and take omega-3 supplements every day, and you will reduce your risk of heart failure. Taking omega-3 supplements had the most dramatic protective effect, but eating fatty fish every week also helps. Interestingly, eating more than one portion of fatty fish every week didn’t seem to lower the risk any further.

Integrator Blog - Wayne Jonas, MD on Obama's White House Office of Health Reform: No Clear Commitment to Health and Wellness
On March 5, 2009, Barack Obama convened a White House Forum on Health Reform in which the administration underscored its commitment to take on the nation's crisis in its medical processes. A month later, on April 8, 2009, Obama acted again by establishing the White House Office of Health Reform. For perspective on these developments and what they mean to integrative practice, the Integrator turned to Wayne Jonas, MD, president and CEO of the Samueli Institute, where Jonas has led the development of the ambitious, and long overdue, Wellness Initiative for the Nation (WIN). In this invited column, Jonas notes shortcomings of current thinking and the pressing need for an "Executive office to focus specifically on developing policies and programs for lifestyle-based chronic disease prevention and management, integrative health care practices and health promotion." This posting also includes the full Executive Order.

The LifeQuake Phenomenon: How to Thrive (Not Just Survive) in Times of Personal and Global Upheaval - Toni Galardi
A certain kind of busyness is crucial to life, allowing us to earn a living, create art, and achieve success. But too often it consumes us and we become crazy busy, nonstop busy, and we expend extraneous effort that gets us nowhere. Marc Lesser’s new book shows us the benefits of doing less in a world that has increasingly embraced more — more desire, more activity, more things, more exhaustion. Less is about stopping, about the possibility of finding composure in the midst of activity. The ideas and practices that Lesser outlines offer a radical yet simple approach to transforming a lifestyle based on endless to-do lists into a more meaningful approach that is truly more productive in every sense.

Mind/Body Health - "Halting Time Pressure" - David Sobel, MD
Time pressure can have powerful effects on the body. Our brain regards clocks, deadlines, and interrupted schedules as a threat, and calls up the "fight or flight" stress response, notes David Sobel, M.D. in ""Halting Time Pressure.". The incessant struggle to do more and more in less and less time also makes us more likely to respond with toxic anger to anyone or anything slowing us down. We feel we're not accomplishing what we should and self esteem plummets. We feel exhausted and overwhelmed all the time, denying ourselves the satisfaction of a job well done. Personal relationships suffer. We don't have time for the real conversations and intimacy that help buffer stress and increase our resistance to disease. Because of the added tension and worry about getting things done, we may lose sleep. We slip into bad habits, eating too much or too little or relying on junk food. We avoid exercise, light up a cigarette or turn to alcohol, caffeine, or pills to rev up or calm down.
