How Not to Get Sick - This Doctor Does Not Want to See You
The prestigious Cleveland Clinic may be leading the way to the medicine of the future - focusing on wellness and prevention prevention — intervening in patients' lives before they get sick — has long been part of the medical lexicon, programs to educate and encourage patients to adopt healthy behaviors have never truly been embraced. Ours is a system that rewards pills and procedures and nurtures a clinical culture in which the goal is primarily to fix what goes wrong. That is not how a health-care system should work. Patients want to live healthier lives should be encouraged — and supported, both financially and emotionally — to do so. In fact, we soon may have no other choice.

Shifting America from sick care to genuine wellness
With the Senate health committee convening daily to craft a comprehensive health reform bill, the basic outline of this landmark legislation is now clear. Yes, it will ensure access to affordable, quality care for every American. But, just as important, it will hold down health care costs by creating a sharp new emphasis on disease prevention and public health. This legislation may be an opportunity to recreate America as a genuine wellness society – a society that is focused on prevention, good nutrition, fitness, and public health.

New Poll Finds Disease Prevention is Top Priority for Americans in Health Reform
A June 8, 2009 release on a survey from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reports that US citiens rate "disease prevention as the most important health reform priority." Those surveyed "overwhelmingly support increasing funding for prevention programs to reduce disease and keep people healthy." In the poll, 70 percent ranked investing in prevention between an eight and 10 on a scale of zero to ten, where zero means not at all an important health care priority and 10 means very important and 46% rated prevention as a 10 out of 10. Only 15% felt more emphasis should be placed on treatment. Prevention was rated higher than all other proposals, including providing tax credits to small businesses and prohibiting health insurers from denying coverage based on health status.

Mind/Body Health - "Rx: Halting Time Pressure" - Dr. David Sobel
For most of us, the modern-day world seems to be spinning faster and faster. Computers, faxes, pagers, car phones and automated tellers, far from saving time, seem to add pressure. According to a Harris survey, in 1990, the average American had 37% less leisure time than in 1973. "Leisure" time is crammed full of activities, commitments, and responsibilities. Even our children feel the pressure of a chock-full day:
school, music lessons, soccer practice, and homework, reports Dr. David Sobel in "Rx: Halting Time Pressure." View more
