The two myths about depression, and why antidepressants don't work
More than half the people who are taking a powerful antidepressant aren’t getting any help from the drug – and that’s because doctors still work with two assumptions about depression that are false, researchers have said this week.      View more

Why cancer screening does more harm than good
Screening for breast and prostate cancer may be a waste of time and money, and is causing a great deal of unnecessary worry and treatment among people who have been wrongly diagnosed. Despite 20 years of screening, deaths from the two diseases have not declined; instead, cancer rates are higher, more patients are being treated, and the incidence of aggressive and late-stage cancers has not gone down, say researchers from the University of California, San Francisco.      View more

Mobile phones do cause brain tumours, major study finally confirms
Long-term use of mobile phones can cause brain tumours, a major World Health Organization study will finally announce later this year. People who have used a mobile phone for more than 10 years face a ‘significantly increased risk’ of developing brain tumours such as glioma, says the Interphone study, which reviewed the evidence from 13 countries, involving around 12,800 people. It will publish its conclusions later this year following a delay of four years.

Healthy Computing - "Daily Athlete" - Erik Peper, PhD
Computing is an athletic event. It requires the frequent use of certain muscles hour after hour, day after day. In fact, when we work at the computer we use our upper extremity muscles more than any world class athlete would (do you know of any marathon runner who runs 5 days a week, 8 hours per day?). Thus, fitness is an important component in staying healthy at the computer. Yet, when we are done with our workday, travel home, and tend to family needs, most of us don't have an hour to go to the gym, leaving us in an unhealthy cycle of inactivity. Reverse this trend and improve your health when you become a Daily Athlete.     View more

Passage of a bipartisan amendment from US Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Tom Carper (D-DE) has elevated a debate Integrator columnist Michael Levin has repeated brought to these pages. To change behavior, in Levin's view, "education rarely works, economics usually does." The Ensign-Carper amendment allow health plan costs to be cut by as much as 50% for those who engage healthy behaviors. Levin lays out what he believes are significant opportunities for the integrative medicine community. The Whole Food Guide to Strong Bones: A Holistic Approach - Annemarie Cobin, PhD
In tough times, we look outside ourselves for things to change instead of looking inward, where true abundance resides. It’s tempting to downplay important values like generosity, integrity, and intuition. These niceties can take a backseat because we think the world needs to change before we can find wealth. But they are what make it possible to find prosperity, no matter what happens in the world around us. These inner traits help us reach our outer goals.

Ola Loa Kick the Caffeine Habit This Year! - Destress with Teeccino Caffeine Free Herbal Coffee
Coffee drinkers may be surprised to learn that herbal coffee actually has nutritional benefits which help nourish and keep the body healthy. Coffee, on the other hand, only supplies the drug, caffeine, which stimulates your adrenal glands but does not provide energy - actually it could deplete the body's energy reserves. Teeccino is the first herbal coffee on the market - a blend of herbs, grains, fruits and nuts that are roasted, ground and brewed just like coffee. Dark, rich, and full-bodied, Teeccino brings you all the satisfaction of a robust brew with no caffeine reaction. Teeccino tastes mildly sweet from dates and figs, with only 15 calories per cup.      View More
