Loneliness Can Be Contagious, Study Finds
Loneliness, like a bad cold, can spread among groups of people, according to a study by researchers at the University of Chicago, the University of California-San Diego and Harvard.
Using longitudinal data from a large-scale study that has been following health conditions for more than 60 years, a team of scholars found that lonely people tend to share their loneliness with others. Gradually over time, a group of lonely, disconnected people moves to the fringes of social networks. View more
Burned Out, Depressed Surgeons More Likely To Commit More Major Medical Errors
Surgeons who are burned out or depressed are more likely to say they had recently committed a major error on the job, according to the largest study to date on physician burnout. The new findings suggest that the mental well-being of the surgeon is associated with a higher rate of self-reported medical errors, something that may undermine patient safety more than the fatigue that is often blamed for many of the medical mistakes.

Integrative Dentistry - "Mercury Dental Fillings: Hazard Or Hoax" - Flora Parsa Stay, DDS
On a daily basis thousands of individuals have mercury and silver inserted into their teeth by American dentists. There are claims that mercury is hazardous causing a variety of illnesses including brain damage, birth defects, multiple sclerosis, memory loss, chronic fatigue and allergies. On the other hand the American Dental Association maintains that mercury amalgam fillings are safe and it is unethical for a dentist to suggest or recommend the removal of amalgam restorations for the alleged purpose of removing toxic substance from the body. In "Mercury Dental Fillings: Hazard Or Hoax" Flora Parsa Stay, D.D.S. explains under what circumstances mercury can be toxic, and offers guidelines for evaluating your own exposure. She recommends you not add any new mercury dental fillings. View more

Integrator Blog - Rocket Science, the Manhattan Project and a Healthy Nation Partnership
Implementing healthy practices seem straightforward. Solving them seems to be not "rocket science." But then why are we having such difficulties? A public-private Healthy Nation Partnership and a section of proposed federal health reform legislation each suggest the dimensions of brilliance we must draw upon to lay a foundation for a healthy society. The former initiative, recently announced, is led by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the AARP and the Bravewell Collaborative; the latter by US Senator Tom Harkin, the Samueli Institute and others. Wellness entrepreneur James Strohecker, CEO of HealthWorld Online suggests the nation needs another "Manhattan Project" such as was created to develop the bomb. But might not the key to establishing Harkin's "wellness society" be nothing less than unraveling what was sown by that earlier project?

Mind/Body Health - "The Keys to Healthy Aging" - David Sobel, MD
Today, most people don't just want to live long lives. They want to live long healthy lives. We all know people who have been very successful at aging - not just the "super elders" who run marathons, but ordinary people who maintain vital, active lives, even in the face of chronic illness, says David S. Sobel, M.D. in "The Keys to Healthy Aging". But what are the predictors of healthy aging?

Spiritual Wellness - "Rendering Unto Caesar" - Philip Goldberg, PhD
As we approach the final lap in a presidential campaign, Philip Goldberg
finds himself reflecting on the relationship between spirituality and
social/political involvement. In "Rendering Unto Caesar" he notes that on
the one hand, by turning our gaze inward to the true source of happiness,
spiritual teachings can foster detachment from social problems. On the
other hand, the spiritual path can lead to direct social and political
engagement. You may feel ill-equipped to have an impact on the world stage.
But your vote counts, every check you write makes a difference, every act
of kindness adds up. View more
