Continuing our Wellness Journey - Breathing
This week our journey focuses on Breathing, the second of 12 keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. We can survive for many weeks without food, several days without water, but without air, life ceases in a matter of minutes. When the air is clear, your lungs strong, your body relaxed, and your mind at peace, you experience total wellbeing. Unfortunately, this ideal is seldom realized.... View more
Simply Well - "Move Your Body and Move Your Soul" - John W. Travis, MD, MPH
As the body, mind, and soul are always connected, exercising involves your mind and your spirit. In "Move Your Body and Move Your Soul" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., presents exercise as a natural way of achieving an altered state of consciousness in which the rational and problem-oriented mind is temporarily put on hold. A deep sense of connectedness to all life and a sense of inner knowledge are potential benefits when exercise is done consciously. View more

Healthy Living with Natural Medicine - "Elements of a Strong Foundation: Part 1" - Holly Lucille, ND, RN
When caring for people, no matter where they are in their process of life and of health, teaching about the foundations of health is a sure step towards preventing any further harm. If I were a carpenter, helping people build the house of their health, a strong foundation would be the most important place to start. Other modalities or interventions would certainly come into play, but much later. With a strong foundation, the winds of change and of life can pick up and swirl around but that house of health is going to stand strong with a sturdy sense of resilience. View more
Dr. Christine Horner's Natural Secrets for Breast Health - "Breast Health Tip #10: Antioxidants"
In this age of widespread pollution, toxins, and stressful lifestyles that fuel the production of oxygen free radicals, most of us need more antioxidant protection than what we can get from our food. This fact becomes significant in the context of what Christine Horner, M.D., F.A.C.S reports in "Breast Health Tip #10: Antioxidants." Taking supplemental antioxidants, like selenium, can lower your risk of breast cancer by as much as 50%. View more

Integrator Blog - "First Professional Doctorate" Exposes Rifts over the Future of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM)
Responses of readers from the acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) profession challenged a statement in the most recent Integrator round-up. They argue that there is no "emerging consensus" on the proposal of the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) to establish a "first professional doctorate" (FPD) for the profession. Here are responses and links to the heated debate. Included are statements from the Community Acupuncture Network (CAN-opposed) and the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM-in favor). CAN will formally take their protest to the US Department of Education should ACAOM go forward. I follow with some altogether non-conclusive comments.

There's A Yogi in the Kitchen! - "Lessons in Curry" - Siri Ved Kaur Khalsa
To most Westerners, curry or "curried" refers to anything that is made with curry powder. In "Lessons in Curry" Siri-Veda Kaur Khalsa teaches us that curry is actually a special dish, while what we call "curry" is really just the normal way of preparing vegetables in India. Learn what spices to use, along with how to buy, prepare and store these spices to have on hand for other curry recipes.

Spiritual Wellness - "The Spirit Of Relationship" - Philip Goldberg, PhD
A number of years ago, I read that Leonard Cohen, one of my favorite songwriters, had broken up with the actress Rebecca de Mornay and moved to a Zen monastery. My first reaction was: couldn't he find a way to live in the monastery with Rebecca de Mornay? Like many contemporary seekers, I've always had one foot in a secluded cave and the other in a nice house with a loving companion and all the conveniences of modern life.

Healing Power of the Mind - "Healing Wisdom " - Martin Rossman, MD
I use this story to illustrate two very different approaches to medicine and healing. One seeks to cooperate with, stimulate, and work with natural healing abilities, while the other goes to war with nature, and attempts to conquer her. Sometimes one works better than the other, sometimes both work, and sometimes neither.
