US FDA: FDA Finalizes Rules for Claims on Dietary Supplements
On January 6, 2000 the FDA published its final rule that defines the
types of statements that can be made concerning the effect of a
dietary supplement on the structure or function of the body pursuant
to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).
Under DSHEA, dietary supplements may bear "structure/function" claims
-- claims that the products affect the structure or function of the
body -- without prior FDA review. They may not, without prior FDA
review, bear a claim that they can prevent, treat, cure, mitigate or
diagnose disease (a disease claim). This final rule describes how FDA
will distinguish disease claims from structure/function claims. While
this rule should not affect the availability of dietary supplement
products or consumer access to them, it may affect whether certain
claims can be made under DSHEA and therefore may result in some
labeling changes for these products.
Influenza is the true Y2K Bug
They are the familiar sights and sounds of winter: the sniffling nose,
the dry, throaty voice and the grimace that follows a swallow of
medicine. Better get used to them, health officials say. The flu,
which struck the West hard last month, has arrived like a storm along
the East Coast, filling hospital waiting rooms and doctors' offices
with ailing patients.
The latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention show that more than 99 percent of the cases reported so far
are influenza type A. Most of the cases, officials say, appear to be
the Sydney strain of the virus, which also struck last year.
Healthy Practices Could Cut Heart Disease Deaths In Half
Dr. Lynn Smaha, president of the American Heart Association, reports
"Healthy eating and the other tried-and-true preventive measures such
as increased physical activity, proper control of blood pressure and
cholesterol levels, if practiced by everyone, would reduce the
estimated number of 1.4 million deaths annually attributed to
cardiovascular disease by 50 to 60 percent." If, somehow, all heart,
stroke and blood-vessel disease could be eliminated, life expectancy
in the United States would rise by seven years.
Discovering New Medicines In The Rain Forest
The Earth is actually a unique pharmacopoeia, offering a wealth of
pure and untapped resources. In fact, most of the natural, synthetic
or semisynthetic drugs used today come from its soil, oceans,
atmosphere, plants and animals. Yet, perhaps it is the rain forest
that remains the most fully stocked shelf of the medicine cabinet that
is our planet.
Some extremely effective treatments in modern medicine were derived
from natural sources. Two substances isolated from the Madagascar
periwinkle vincristine sulfate and vinblastine sulfate are used to
combat several afflictions, including childhood leukemia and Hodgkin's
disease. One of the greatest natural medicines ever discovered,
quinine, from the bark of the cinchona tree, is an effective treatment
for malaria. Quinine was later converted into quinidine, which helps
treat atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats
irregularly.

The Healer
Within
The self-applied health enhancement methods movements are meant to be
the seeds of your own inventiveness. In "Gentle
Movements and Postures, Part II" Dr. Roger Jahnke reminds
you not to sabotage your mastery by thinking they must be done a
certain way. Make it up, make it fun, spread the word. Learn from
others, add favorites, steal from the masters; they are always willing
to share. Bring the breath and relaxation practices together with the
effort of the movements, that is the balance. When you have made
contact with the extent to which gentle movement has a profound health
effect, you have become a part of the solution to the medical crisis.
Mind Over Matter
In his column, "Tobacco:
A global epidemic" Barry Bittman, M.D. points out that
10+ million people die EACH YEAR from a product that individuals
actually pay for. His shares his ideas on why, and challenges us to
look at some economic realities.
Natural Medicine Research
Chromium is an essential element required for normal carbohydrate and
lipid metabolism. Lack of adequate chromium ingestion has been
associated with increased risk factors for diabetes, such as elevated
blood sugar and fasting insulin, in addition to impaired glucose
tolerance. The benefits of chromium have been touted for many years
and consumers have become aware of the important role this mineral
plays in the body. But, is the ingestion of chromium safe? Does it
have any toxicity? In this column "Is
Chromium safe?" Dr. Sahelian comments on a recent study
on rats that gives us some clues.

Healthy Recipes
Imagine a bread every bit as substantial and savory as wholegrain
bread, but containing no grains. Danish chef Oscar Umahro Cadogan
brings us this recipe for "Hazelnut
Bread" which is suitable for people allergic to gluten,
those following the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet," and those
following other low carbohydrate diets. The large amount of flaxseed
