Prevention Is Key to Avoiding Cold, Flu
Time is the only sure cure for the cold and the flu, two of winter's most common illnesses. To treat the symptoms drink lots of fluids and get lots of rest to help maximize your body's effort to fight. One of the best ways to prevent the cold and flu is to practice proper hand-washing. To boost the body's immune system eat a healthy diet (especially foods containing vitamin C and zinc) and exercise.
Don't Dismiss Signs of An Eating Disorder
Of the 5 million to 8 million women in the United States, who currently suffer from an eating disorder, 50,000 are expected to die. It is important to catch this disease early. Look for changes in young girls (and boys), such as no longer eating favorite foods, having excuses for not eating, and withdrawing from activities to spend more time exercising. If you suspect unhealthy tendencies, become informed parents.
Feeling Sleepy? Deprivation Is a National Issue
We've become a nation of walking zombies. More than half the adult population of the United States is carrying a substantial sleep debt. Sleep experts believe eight hours is the minimum amount of sleep needed per night, as between the seventh and the eighth hour is when we get almost an hour of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, the time when the mind repairs itself, grows new connections and puts it all together.
Work Better With Less Caffeine
If you want to be more productive at the office, watch how much coffee or tea you drink. A cup or two can give you a boost, but more than 350 milligrams of caffeine increases stress and interferes with concentration, the BBC News reports. That works out to more than three average cups of coffee or more than six cups of tea.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
Scientists have known for years that major and minor life stresses interfere with immune function and contribute to disease. Stressful life events increase your susceptibility to several types of infections, from the common cold to tuberculosis, and to auto-immune disorders in which your body's immune system attacks its own cells. Although you may not be able to control all the stressors in your life, there are many steps you can take to build your immune resistance in the face of stress. In this column "Stress and Immunity" Leo Galland, M.D. explains how clear thinking, supportive social relationships, moderate exercise, adequate sleep, and immune-boosting nutrients can keep you from becoming a victim of stress.
The Healer Within
The traditional systems of medicine from the Asian cultures have always had some type of massage stimulation to the ears. When you work on your ears you will notice that within 4-5 minutes of vigorous massage your ears get hot. This is cause by the increase of blood flow to that area. The Chinese say, "When the blood is increased to an area the Energy (Qi) is increased to that area as well." If you have someone else rub your ears you will notice that your ears are extremely sensuous. This is because the ears are heavily enervated. The combination of the presence of the nerves, the effect of the pressure and the heightened circulation causes stimulation to the reflexes of the Microsystems of the ear, notes Dr. Roger Jahnke in this column, "Self-Applied Massage of the Ears." Through this reflex Microsystems all parts of the body can be influenced through pressure massage to the ear.

When it comes to health, the best thing is not to get angry
in the first place. Once triggered, however, is it better to
argue, shout, and bang your fists - or silently seethe? In
"Healthy Anger: Let It Out or Keep It In?" David S. Sobel,
M.D. presents practical answers.
Keeping Fit with
Dr. Wayne Westcott
Due to shorter days, less physical activity, and abundant holiday meals, winter is a time when most adults experience increasing bodyweight and decreasing fitness. In this column "Exercise For Better Health And Sports Performance" Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. explains how the usual reduction in aerobic exercise results in lower functional capacity of the cardiovascular system, and the typical reduction in strength exercise results in both muscle and bone loss. In addition to accelerating the aging process, lack of exercise leads to less desirable body composition (more fat and less muscle), increased risk of injury, and decreased athletic performance. On the other hand, brightening the winter days with some sensible exercise can reverse many degenerative conditions, reduce your injury potential, improve your physical appearance, and enhance your sports participation.

"Pycnogenol: Safe and Effective" With Professor Peter Rohdewald, Ph.D.
Interested in learning more about Pycnogenol and the research on its health benefits? In "Pycnogenol: Safe and Effective" Richard Passwater, Ph.D. interviews Professor Peter Rohdewald, Ph.D. about his research findings. Comments address how Pycnogenol can act as a really powerful antioxidant in aqueous solution in the way that vitamin C acts and in a non-aqueous medium it catches radicals, as vitamin E does, but better! While vitamins C and E are still required, Pycnogenol should be considered a very powerful helper. Professor Rohdewald also discusses the high affinity of Pycnogenol to collagen and elastin and how it stabilizes red blood cell membranes.

"The Mastery of Love: A Practical Guide to the Art of
Relationship" is a refreshingly honest investigation of the
true nature of love. Author, Don Miguel Ruiz, brings to
light the commonly held fallacies and misplaced expectations
about love that permeate most relationships. In the
tradition of Carlos Castaneda, he uses inspirational stories
to impart the wisdom of three fundamental Toltec masteries
(Awareness, Transformation, and Love). The themes explored
include the Toltec wisdom of the heart, the track of love,
and the war of control.
Healthy Child Update
The search for ways to prevent and treat colds and flu has been going on throughout recorded history. Today many people consider them an inevitable fact of winter and are resigned to letting them run their course. While it's true that a cure for colds and flu does not exist, research during the past ten years into medicinal plants of Eastern and Western origin has shown that herbal medicines offer the potential to help the immune system stave off these bugs, as well as to speed healing if one of them has laid you low. The column "Herbal care for colds and flu" by Daniel Gagnon outlines the keys to using medicinal herbs effectively, including which herbs to use and when in the cold cycle to take them.
Healthy Man Update
Cancer of the testicles accounts for only about one percent of all cancers in men. It is, though, the most common type of cancer in males aged 20 to 40, but can occur anytime after age 15. In the column "Testicular Cancer and Testicular Self-Exam" the American Institute of Preventive Medicine stresses that testicular cancer is curable 90 to 95 percent of the time if found and treated early, so teaching of testicular self-examination should begin between the ages of 13 and 18.
