The Estrogen Alternative--Black Cohosh
For decades, women around the world have treated the symptoms of menopause with a simple herb called black cohosh. Now the National Institute of Health is putting it to the test. No matter how future studies turn out, black cohosh will never replace estrogen, because it is probably not as powerful as the hormone and may not have the same positive effect. But if it does ease hot flashes American doctors may one day find themselves doing the unthinkable: recommending a traditional botanical folk remedy as an alternative to a modern prescription drug.
New Guide for Cholesterol Treatment
Some 53 million Americans have high cholesterol. The National Institutes of Health has released aggressive new guidelines for doctors identifying and treating people at risk for heart disease. The guidelines take more note of "good" high-density lipoprotein, and recommended a new set of "therapeutic lifestyle changes" to help lower cholesterol. These include limiting saturated fats to 7 percent of total calories, increasing intake of soluble fiber and plant stanols, weight reduction and increased physical activity.
Stress Hormone Level Reliable Predictor of Divorce
Elevated levels of stress hormones were the most reliable predictors of divorce in 90 couples who were followed for 10 years by university researchers. The conclusion was a surprise in light of literature suggesting that such conscious actions as negative or aggressive behavior were the best predictors of divorce. "Listen to your gut. It may be telling you something" advises one professor.

The Healer Within
In "Self-Applied Massage of the Hands," Dr. Roger Jahnke explains how to do self-applied massage to the hands. The basic technique for the hands is the same as for the feet. However, the hands are much easier because they are so easy to reach. Without sitting down or having to remove your shoes you can go right to work. You can do this any where at any time.
Mind Over Matter
In " One Happy Family: notes of camaraderie" Barry Bittman, M.D. relates the story of an elementary school music teacher in western Pennsylvania, who combines love for children with opportunities for recreational music-making that builds bridges on solid foundations of camaraderie, caring, nurturing and creative expression. Perhaps if every child in our nation began each day with an interactive program that taught tolerance, respect and appreciation for one another, we would not have school violence.
Understanding Homeopathy
The fact that about one in seven Americans suffer from chronic sinusitis suggests that conventional treatments are not very effective. Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating the acute symptoms of sinusitis, although professional "constitutional care" is usually necessary to cure chronic sinusitis, according to homeopathic expert Dana Ullman in "Homeopathy and Sinusitis: Safer Remedies." Constitutional care refers to individualized treatment of a person's entire health, physical and psychological, past and present. This professional homeopathic treatment can lead to a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of acute sinusitis attacks and can often even lead to a total elimination of their occurrence.
Integrative Dentistry
Do you think that just brushing and flossing is all it takes for healthy teeth and gums? Although poor hygiene plays a major role in the development of gum disease and tooth decay, an extremely important secondary factor is diet and nutrition. In "Nutrition And Dental Health" Flora Parsa Stay D.D.S. explains how the same laws that govern the health of the rest of the body have the same affect on the oral cavity. She details specific vitamins and minerals necessary for development and maintenance of healthy gums and teeth and for prevention of periodontal (gum) disease.

Childlife Essentials - Meeting Your Child's Nutritional Needs
In my practice as a pediatric homeopath, my efforts are dedicated to understanding what promotes health. This includes what causes, as well as what prevents and cures the diverse conditions affecting our children. Careful nurturing through the formative years creates the basis for good health throughout life. On the physical level, this means a healthful diet and nutritional supplements. The body and mind developed during childhood create the foundation for the rest of your child's life. It is my hope that ChildLife Nutrition for Kids will play an ongoing role in developing and maintaining many healthful and hopeful lives. -- Dr. Murray Clarke

Healthy Man Update
Athlete's foot is a fungus infection of the toes and foot, characterized by an itchy, scaly, odorous rash between the toes. Hot weather and wearing shoes which do not allow the feet to breathe are two predisposing factors. Most susceptible are people who have previously had the infection, adult men, those whose feet perspire and persons with a weakened immune response. Internal treatments do little. In "Athlete's foot" David L. Hoffmann B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. outlines fungicide essential oils that offer the most effective topical treatment.
