Congressman Pallone Requests Funds For Vitamin Relief USA
The Healthy Foundation announced that Congressman Frank Pallone (D), New Jersey formally requested that the Department of Education include $6 million in its budget for The Healthy Foundation's Vitamin Relief USA. Head To Toe Suncare Guide
If you're heading for pools or parks this summer, you most likely will remember to apply sunscreen. But there are a myriad of other areas to consider when taking precautions. What are you doing to prevent sun damage of your hair and scalp, eyes, and lips? Did you protect your ankles and the tops of feet? All areas are important. Just one bad blistering sunburn during childhood can double the risk of skin cancer later in life.
Obesity May Slow Cognitive Function, Increase Pain, Researchers Suggest
Doctors have long known that obesity increases the risk of heart disease and late-onset diabetes. But new research suggests that carrying around a lot of excess weight may have a damaging effect on most facets of health, including memory. A recently published university study reveals that overweight and obese people reported slower cognitive abilities, increased pain and decreased mobility at rates two to three times that of those with a healthy body weight.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
A large body of research over the past ninety years has demonstrated the preventive value of eating foods fermented with Lactobacilli or their cousins, Bifidobacteria. In the column "Friendly Bacteria" Leo Galland, M.D. explains how eating these friendly bacteria prevents intestinal infection due to viruses or pathogenic bacteria and preserves intestinal permeability in the face of infection or other types of injury, can prevent antibiotic-induced diarrhea and travelers diarrhea and can lower serum cholesterol levels. Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria also show anti-cancer activity, by two mechanisms: they inhibit the growth or activity of cancer-promoting bacteria and some strains actually produce chemicals which inhibit tumor growth.
Mind Body Health Newsletter
If you are like the majority of patients, several weeks after a health evaluation you will probably remember less than half of what the doctor told you. In "Doctors and Patients: Not on the Same Wavelength" David S. Sobel, M.D. presents the reasons for this "disconnect" and key points for improvement.
Keeping Fit
Sixty minutes of exploring different walking trails in your local state park is a delightful alternative to a 30 minute jog around the track. In "Park Season" Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. describes how a fast walk up and down the undulating trails provides an excellent exercise session. The varied terrain, the beautiful trees, shrubs and rock formations, the birds, squirrels and rabbits keep your attention focused on the environment rather than on your watch.

Osteocheck - Non-Invasive Bone Loss Analysis
Bone health should be a top health priority as early in life as possible. Throughout life, fresh bone is continually created to replace worn segments. Eventually, however, bone building falls behind bone removal, increasing bone loss. Measuring the rate of bone loss is effective in evaluating bone health, offering an immediate alternative to bone density assessment. OsteoCheck by BodyBalance, a quick, non-invasive bone loss analysis, measures deoxypyridinium, a key marker found in urine as bone loss occurs.
